VS Zapper Mod isn't registering hits

I have done the zapper gun mod listed here http://www.thetechnickel.com/video-games/nintendo-vs-nes-zapper to the T. I have both Duck Hunt and Hogan's Alley installed on my MultiVS board and neither of them detect a hit where I can play the games. I have used the orange gun that was installed on the cabinet when I purchased it (was Hogan's Alley) and I have modded two zappers and with the same result. I only get gun firing sound on the game when pulling the trigger. I have checked the 5v to the gun, done the gun mod to the VS board, and I have adjusted the monitor to very different levels of brightness both at the flyback and the remote board. Monitor has just been rebuilt and colors look great. I swear I seen this topic before with the exact same problem but I can't find it through the search or via google. What am I missing or how do I fix this?

Thanks,
David

Alarm was disabled when I did the zapper mod. I also just tested with a different Nintendo monitor and got the same results. What are the odds I got all bad zappers?

That's weird, I did the same exact thing you did, even down to using two different Zappers, and both work fine. Keep tweaking the monitor. In fact, mine seems to work if the monitor is on the brighter side, where the blacks are almost grey. Try that.

Well, I have adjusted this monitor to all ends and never got a single result. They don't work with the real Hogan's Alley roms and ppu or with the modified roms on the MultiVS either. I'm guessing bad guns and I have no NES or CRT televisions to test them on before hand. Guess I will have to find another gun and give it another shot.

Has this vs pcb ever been tested with gun games? Does it have the modification done to work with gun games?

I have the one that came with the game when I purchased it (was Hogan's Alley) and it didn't have the gun mod done to it. It didn't work with the gun that was installed. I purchased a zapper, did the mod, and it still didn't work. I have since did the gun mods to that vs board and and to my second board with the same result. When I purchased the MultiVs, I had Duck Hunt and Hogan's Alley installed. I purchased a second zapper, did the mods again. Nothing so far has worked, so I must be getting bad guns because I know everything else has been done right. I just got in two more VS boards today without the gun mods, so I will be testing them to see if they work and to see if maybe the gun will work with them.

Are you using an original harness to get them wired up? I'm curious how you have these connected in. On mine, I'm using a JAMMA harness and converter, so I wired my guns directly to the points on the adapter that match up with the points on the original harness.

I soldered directly on the board with mine, well, to the adapter, pretty much because I found that hooking the gun up to the harness wires for whatever reason didn't seem to cut it. That was the only way it worked correctly for me. You could try something similar and see what results you get.

I'm using the factory harness that would be used to convert a Donkey Kong cabinet. I will see about tapping into the harness closer to the board to see if that works. Haven't tested my new boards yet.

UPDATE: I soldered the wires directly to the board and the gun works like it should. The install right now is a temporary fix on one of my spare boards. I will be doing a permanent mod at a later date so that I can make use of my MultiVs games. Thanks for posting the pic. I had seen it before on another thread, but wouldn't have known which one it was. Sorry it took so long for this update, but since my last post on this topic, I had picked up a non working Ms Pac-Man and I focused my attention to that project. Just got back to the gun problem today.
