When playing multiplayer on a Vs. UniSystem (with Super Mario Bros.), player 1 moves from the left set of controls to the right set of controls. I'm assuming, based on very limited knowledge, that this is to enable the gun on shooter games because it seems to always be attached to the right side. I'm wondering if there is something I can do on my board to keep player 1 on the left and player 2 on the right? The first thing that everyone who's come over to play Super Mario Bros. has said is "that's dumb" when they have to go to the opposite side of what seems natural.

I'm sure this has been covered before, but I have been unable to word my searches properly to find the answer. Seems the members here have been able to do many things with these VS. systems, so I'm wondering if anyone has tried this. Thanks for any help or direction you can give.

I used to own one of those machines and I don't remember it doing that.

On my Vs Dualsystem (same board as a Unisystem) You can control the game on the player 1 and player 2 side on the side that SMB is installed.

Uhhhh, what?

Yes. On my red tent I can use either joy stick on the one side. Doesn't make any difference.

It comes in really handy playing Pinball, I can use the player 1 "B" button and player 2 "A" button. It feels much more pinbally.

Edit, I removed the extra 'e' from my previous post.

Maybe I'm insane, but I could have sworn this is how it was working for me. It's been bugging me so I wanted to ask but I'm not at home to check. Now I'm feeling unsure and kind of stupid...

Mine does the same thing. You can use the player one controls, and the player two controls, for just one player. Maybe it's just that way for people who find the controls cramped. I do like to use the player one joystick, and the player two buttons. It's comfortable.

Like Tighe and Michaelthurston, I use both sets of controls to play VS. Excitebike and Pinball. Much more comfortable and feels more natural.

Not to necro a semi-old thread - but this is weird.

I can't stand playing on the right side of Nintendo Cab.

I have Vs. Excite bike in slot 2 of a Unisystem board in a dedicated Unisystem cab, and it forces me to use the player 2 controls (on the right side).

I have a Vs. Dr. Mario in slot 2 of a different Unisystem board in another dedicated separate Unisystem cab, and player 1 uses the correct controls (left side)

When i put the Vs. Unisystem board into a converted Popeye cab, it let me use the player 1 controls on the left side.

I guess I should swap the Dr. Mario board with the Excitebike and see what happens...

If that works for you, I'd really like to know. I'm almost to the point with my restore where I'll be putting everything back together & I'm curious what my options are other than swapping which side the controls are on.

Update / Closure:

Switching the chips to the other side did not work. As a matter of fact, I learned that most single player Vs. games (like Excitebike) must be on the 'B' side.

I put the Excitebike board in a different cabinet, and the 1 player is now the LEFT side. I'm guessing that someone has the control panel wiring bass ackwards.

Dr. Mario always forces player 1 to play on the left side, regardless of the cabinet.

Yeah, I made the original post before I took it all apart. Sometimes I assume things are put together correctly. Unfortunately the controls were on the wrong sides. Fortunately it was an extremely easy "fix." Felt kinda dumb.
