Lilman just burned me some Tetris roms and did a wonderful job. After a little help from him (thanks John) I have the game up and running with a Hogan's Alley ppu (001). The game works, but the colors seem washed out blues and greens. I basically have this screen:

But the light blue you see in the screen shot above (Tengen's Tetris for the NES) is bright lime green on mine. My Tetris pieces have diagonal striped patterns in various colors, close to what you see on the right, but it's hard to make out the patterns, as the colors seem to bleed. What is the best PPU for vs. Tetris, and can anyone take a pic of their current title screen for me, and tell me what ppu you are using? That would be swell. This game is as addicting as ever.

I just received my Vs. Tetris chips from John yesterday too. Picked them up with a few other games so I have yet to test the Tetris chips. I will be using a Vs. Hogan's Alley PPU also so I'll let you know what my screen looks like when I fire it up... hopefully tonight.

I need a pic to compare. I wanna know if it's my monitor or what causing the wash out.

No problem Phet... it should be the 0001 ppu with dips 3 on. it should look somthing like this: More like the green on the outsides, for some reason the white balance is off in the picture...

Its an old picture, biut this is what it should look like. Nice greens on the outside...

I am thinking that there may be a brightness issue with your monitor or color issue with the board?? ..

I have an actual Tetris PPU (03B) and when I used it it was nearly unplayable. I had to switch to an 0001 to play and I think it looks great that way. The Tetris PPU works, as I have it plugged into my Star Luster now, but for some reason it looked wacky when comboed with Tetris.

Yep, that's what mine looks like. It's not the RGB pots on the board, or the monitor. I just had Gumshoe in this side of the motherboard and it looked great on the screen. That's just what it's supposed to look like I guess.

Hmm it definately shouldn't look washed out though. The colors are usually crisp and i don't remember them bleeding. I will try to take a better picture after work.

That picture is from a long time ago...

I'll take one too for comparison. Maybe I was expecting too much. The last time I played this it was the arcade version.

Phet... figured it out for you. I just plugged my Vs. Tetris in and the colors looked horrible... like the ones in your and lilman's pics. This is with the dipswitches as 1, 2, 4, 5, 6, & 7 off and 3 & 8 on from Jon's (blkdog) site. Turn dip 8 to off and the colors look great. It's almost like with dip 8 on there was no real black level but with it turned to off the blacks are black. K, gotta go get dinner.

(edit) don't know if this setting is "correct" or not but in my opinion this is how the look best. I only played for about 15 seconds before I got the "hey ben" call from upstairs. More on this later... :)

R E A L L Y ? Thanks I'll try it after I tuck my daughter in. Cool.

Alright, so the problem I'm having is not with the colors any longer but with the high scores. When playing a game the area below "high score" in the upper right isn't number but just shows jumbled characters/colors. And on the high score table (after you lose the game) it's just a big block of jumbled characters/colors. This happened before I switched that dip 8 and after so I know that isn't the cause. I reseated all 4 rom chips and the cpu/ppu. Any idea what might be causing this?

Alright... just tried the Vs Tetris chips and PPU on the other side of the pcb with nothing but the CPU installed on side 1. The high score comes up fine on the side 2 side but now the picture is really wavy. It was never like that with other games. So, the testing begins. Could be a questionable CPU although they have both worked fine for other games. Could be a pcb issue. Looks like I've got some testing ahead of me.

Alright, figured it out. The high scores don't want to work, for some reason, on the left side of the pcb. When I have Vs. Tetris installed on the right side of the pcb and have the left side populated with another game it works fine. So I've got that running fine now.

Wow, this is crazy. I haven't heard of anyone having a problem with this game. OH WOW!!! ... i was way off with the dip switch!! It is dip 7 i think i use. Wow, i didn't get to take a picture last night or get to look at what dip is on.

I think the settings i have are off off off on off off on off...

Ben, look on the bottom side of the board. Is the memory mod done??? ... It is a trace wire connecting anothing? http://www.johnsarcade.com/vs_downloads/misc/VS_Board_Memory_Boost.pdf

Just trying to see what might be happening. I have the memory mod done to the board it is on so i am wondering if that is the problem.
