Im working on a vs super mario for a guy, and never owning one myself, i have a question. When playing 2 players, why does luigi start as player one on the left side? Is this normal?

On a VS machine player 1 is on the right. Almost every game is that way. Alot of the games when in 1 player mode, both left and right joystick and buttons work to move the character. Sucks when someone walks up and starts messing with the open joystick.
Not sure why they did it? Maybe a Japanese thing?
I always wondered about the same thing.
But since I was a teenager 40 years ago, I play with the left side joystick together with the right side buttons. So hence, I hog both players' space, lol.
I also hold the fast button for the entire game, which makes it very painful, but I don't know how to play without it even when parts of the game call for going slow.
