I just got into nintendo vs. stuff about 6 months ago when I picked up a red tent. My main interest at the time was vs SMB as my good friend and I are both SMB freaks and had been wanting to play the vs. version in a cab for some time.

Anyway, I started exploring the rest of the vs. catalog and picked up Ice Climber because I had read about the many differences between the NES and vs. version. I knew about the addition of a stage select, and the additional hazard of bees and wind, etc. but I had never seen mention of the second set of mountains after the first 24 and the super bonus stage. These aren't in the NES version, are they? There is very little real info about vs. ice climber on the web and twin galaxies doesn't even have any scores listed (just some tossed together scores for MAME). If any of the ice climber pros out there could weight in, it would be appreciated.

Also, does anyone have any idea what general range constitutes a "good" score? I just had my first 300,000+ game and it felt like I was doing pretty good. Anyhoo, I've had it for weeks now and I can't get enough. I had always liked Ice Climber ok, but the vs. version really tweaks it to perfection.

Vs. IC is one of my 2 favs on the Vs. system (the other being Vs. Balloon Fight). I have a Unisystem cab with Vs. Ice Climber installed and an upright Dualsystem cab with Vs. Balloon Fight installed. Anyways, to be totally honest, I'm not very good at it. :) Really I just haven't had any time to actually play my games in the past couple months. But I do love having the game. I think it's the fact that there are so many levels that you can select from that keeps it enjoyable because if I get bored with one level I can just start on a different one.

Anyone happen to have a nice Vs. Ice Climber cabinet topper for sale?

Yeah, the level select is very appealing. The levels are so short anyway and the fact that I can start on a new one each time keep me coming back. I love SMB but since a complete game meas investing at least 30-40 min (playing for score), it's nice to be able to jump into ice climbers, whack a topi, and get out in 15 min; and see a new stage each time!

And while were placing our orders, can I get one of those cab toppers too?! or anything ice climbers?!?! ;)

Ice Climber is a great game and would be one of the best games if they only made it dual monitor!! WHY! WHY! WHY! can't I play on two monitors like Balloon Fight?!?!

You mean as in two player? Why does everyone always have to complain about something? Ice Climber is a fine game on one screen.

Yeah, dual screen would be nice but the only difference is not having to share the screen, right? I think Ice climber is actually better on one screen because you can angrily elbow each other when someone gets in your way or climbs too fast and leaves you behind... and in ice climber someone is always going too fast for the other person.
Where I come from many friendships have ended after a heated game of Ice Climber.... and many torrid romances have begun........

seriously though, is there any REAL difference between single and dual ice climber? It's just like having 2 games going at once, right?

Uhhhh, the Lil man's last name IS "Hotcakes", seems pretty obvious why he is sweating like a potbellied pig in heat at this point.

I was going to say something else, but I'm a nice guy now.

OK, sweaty homo-eroticism aside... what kind of scores are people putting up?

Does anyone know what happens after you complete 8 mountains on the second round of new mountains (25-48)? More mountains? Loops? Credits? Kill Screen? Space-time folds in on itself?

Is this starting from level 1?

Well, you can start anywhere on the first 24 you like. Is that what you mean? After you complete 8 you move on to the next 24. If you complete enough bonus stages, you get the "super bonus stage" when you move from the first 8 to the last 8.

Today was my first 300,000+ game (356,XXX I think); before that I was stuck around 250,XXX every time. Your score can get huge on the second set of mountains as the bonus stage completion bonus increases as you go through the game (and I believe maxes out at 50,000).

I was wondering to get these scores, are you starting out right from level 1, or starting from another stage?

I see. Well, honestly, I do it different every time. I've been trying to find the stages that I can perform most consistently on. but I almost always include mountain 1 in my first 8 (regardless of where I start) because it is definitely the easiest of the first 24.

I'd love to know what people's climbing strategies are. What mountains (#s) do you love/hate?

Oh, I suppose it doesn't matter, since you have to complete them all anyway to get to the next stages... Nevermind.

Well, you only have to complete 8 of the first 24 to move on to the next 24 which is significantly harder that the first set. So I would think which eight you do is very important, for both pure difficulty as well as scoring potential.
