I was going to replace a volume pot this weekend on my space duel major havoc conversation. I have a vol. Pot Here at the house that a buddy ordered for me he called it a Atari sound pot. The only markings on it are on the back SHB50K. He said he got it from bob Roberts. I was wondering how many omhs a volume pot originally went in a space duel? And if the one I have will work? Im new to all this and just got the game so don't feel like ruining it with in the first week.
Thanks

If you got it from BobRob and he ID'd it as an Atari vol pot, then it's probably good to use. A lot of Atari's used a 50K vol pot, although it might actually be a rheostat...

Rheostat is the term your Grandfather might have used to describe a Potentiometer or, more commonly known as a "Pot" for short.

There is absolutly nothing mysterious about a Pot - or variable resistor. Your 50K value is pretty bog standard for a volume control on practically ANY modern electronics.

Here is an extract from the Wiki with the link below:

A potentiometer (colloquially known as a "pot") is a three-terminal resistor with a sliding contact that forms an adjustable voltage divider.[1] If only two terminals are used (one side and the wiper), it acts as a variable resistor or rheostat. Potentiometers are commonly used to control electrical devices such as volume controls on audio equipment. Potentiometers operated by a mechanism can be used as position transducers, for example, in a joystick.

You forgot the part where it says "often (rheostats) are designed to handle higher voltage or current".

Now, I'm not sure if there is enough voltage or current in a Space Duel volume line to require a rheostat specifically, rather than a normal 50K-ohm pot.

I remember a thread a while back by kspiff when he was looking for a replacement for a Battlezone volume pot, and it required a rheostat replacement...

The manual states (page 3-5) 50 ohm, 12.5 Watt Wire-Wound Rheostat

I wonder if that is a misprint if you think the others use a 50K.

See, I was thinking it was 50-ohm also, but stuck with 50K because he said that's what BobRob sent him as a replacement. Perhaps the K is a qaulifier and not a metric abbreviation.

We mention the same thing in this thread starting on post #10 when talking about a replacement for Battlezone...

I looked up the part in the Tempest manual and it is the same Part # 19-9032 50 Ohm 12.5 W. Printed page 32, PDF page 40 of 64.

So I guess it really is 50 Ohm.
