Virtual Pinball Progress

Add me to the list of people who has no room for a Pin and would love to make a Virtual Pinball machine. I have the displays, just no spare high-end gaming rig to power the software.

Cost me about $475 for the gaming rig:
- Video Card: $170
- MB & CPU: $170
- Memory: $90
- Power Supply: $45

I am using a Solid State Drive for the disk, but a 7200 or 10k RPM drive would work fine...

Wow that's not bad actually. I had heard Hyperpin needed like a quad-core CPU with really powerful video card. Not sure why though, how much graphical intensity can their be in simulating a pinball table???

I am using an Intel E7500 processor with an nvidia 260 GTX video card. works great... I will take a couple of videos and post them...

Lots been going on with this project, but have not had time to post...

Camera battery died so I have not been able to post videos, will try to do so soon.

Since the last update, the following has been done:
- Digital plunger installed and working
- all buttons wired up
- Active Backglass installed and working
- Nudge/bump working
- Playfield LCD levelled and mounted on a hinge so that it can be lifted to work on the computer
- Solenoids installed to simulate the flippers

Yeah you dont want those clunky displays clogging up your workspace you should just let me know when I can pick them up and get them out of your way for ya :)

Still having some issues with taking videos, but here are some pictures.

A few things of note:
- Cabinet will be stripped, sanded and painted black for the Seattle Pinball and Gameroom show (hopefully)
- Wiring inside is a mess, but will be cleaned up (see point above)
- Custom art is being done for the cabinet

Here are some pictures...

The cab without the backglass/speaker panel plexi and no PF LCD Frame:

Front of the cab. Coin door will be either replaced or painted:

Buttons on the front (Enter, Exit, Pause, Info):

With the "hood" up (sorry for the blurry picture... Flash did not go off):

More pictures...

Another one with the "hood" up (Wood holding it up will be hinged inside the cab, its loose right now):

The computer:

Here is the digital plunger, right flipper buttons and the starter solenoid attached to the blue flipper button. It "smacks" the side of the cab when the flipper button is pressed to let you "feel" the flipper. (again, ignore the mess... Have not spent much time cleaning that up as I need to strip it all out....):

With the frame around the PF LCD:

Still more pictures...

The starting Hyperpin menu:

Back to the Future in the menu. Obviously cannot be seen in the picture, but its animated (some have sounds as well):

Back to the future in play mode:

Indiana Jones in the menu (games are selected by using the flipper to choose the game, then pressing the 'Enter' Button):

Indiana Jones in play mode. Notice the backglass... it is is "active" and simulates the lights behind the backglass in the real pin. More and more of the games are starting to get that feature:

looking good.

it looks like you went with a three monitor setup? is that right? what size tv's are you using for each?

Awesome work man!!!! Thanks for posting the pics. How accurate do the solenoids and nudge feel?

Thank you and my pleasure. The solenoids are not perfect, but they are pretty good. On some games, they are right on with the virtual sound (flipper sound), on others there is a bit of a lag. There is no lag, however, between pressing the button and having the solenoid fire. As for nudge/bump. Its not bad... but I still need to tweak it to make it perfect...

Whats the main differences on yours and this one?

Im just curious, from what I can tell you can put alot more pins on yours as opposed to the 12 on this one. And I like your back display better since its the entire back and not just a small square.

I played that one a couple of weeks ago at an arcade. The PF and backglass monitors are way too small (especially the backglass as its a single monitor, 24" I believe, for both the DMD and the Backglass). There is a bit of a lag the ball, rolling is not perfect... it jitters a bit... Oh, and mine was cheaper... :)

Yup...

Backglass: 30"
DMD: 17"
PF: 45"

The 30" fits almost perfectly. The 17" width is the exact width of the DMD frame that I have (from a Dr Who pinball). You can actually see the 7 square openings under the DMD from the original pinball. It used to have 7 Lamps in there for each of the Doctors. Not sure if I am going to use that for anything yet...

Yours looks alot better, once its done you should sell it to someone to mass produce. Hell I almost want to preorder one for my store.

:) I have been asked to make a couple of these locally... Not sure if I want to tackle that job...
