Virtual pinball from the ground up!

Bumping this one - I picked up this cab from Brett last week and I have some time to work on it while I am waiting on parts for other projects.

I took a look at my pin here (Fish Tales) and made some very minor adjustments, have bondoed the head and am ready for paint.

The guts are a Dual Core 2GHz Intel with 4 GB RAM, 80 GB SSHD and 2 NVidia cards, one 6800 and one GTS250. 42" Plasma Playfield is 1080p via HDMI and the backglass is VGA. (1024X768). I am still working on the computer set up but I had 25 tables working at last count. Had to buy a new video card for the DMD monitor as it would lose configuration after a reboot.

I will post some more pics as I start to put it together afther the paint dries. I spent another $70 today in trim pieces, and I hope that is it!

I have $2800 invested in it so far... ($2797.30 to be exact)

If you have any questions, let me know...

I no have LEDs and Solenoids wired up to be ROM controlled via VP. I also have a motor for motor sounds, a shaker, etc.

Expect to invest more... :)

Mine is a 46" monitor on the playfield.

Nice - I thought about doing those as well - do you have any pics or videos of it in action?

Here are a couple of videos... I will take some pictures as i am working on it for the NW Pinball show...

How did you trim out the edges of the playfield lcd if you dont mind me asking?

I can't seem to find any info on vpforums or hyperspin. my plasma has a 3/4" silver frame around it, do I just paint it black?

Also - how did you mount the 46"? DPTWiz (Brett) has this one set up to use a 3/4 rail on either side, but I am worried about potential for sagging. Should I put something in the middel to support it, via the VESA mounts?

You take the LCD out of the plastic. Then the metal edge is pretty thin.

The pictures above show I already did that. I am refering to (as I described) the 3/4" silver metal frame.

Ahhh, I guess you could cut a 1/2" groove on the left and right inside wall in the cabinet that the LCD could slide in which would leave only 1/4" left. That would require that narrow your cabinet 1 inch. The last 1/4" you could paint black, just mask the screen.

I have strips of wood that are sit on top of the edges of the screen (with double sided tape). they cover the metal perfectly... I then painted it black and routed it to allow me to mount the LEDs inside the wood:

The LCD sits on 2 railings, one one on each side, no problems for over a year and its been moved several times... I also put a hinge on the back that allows me to lift the LCD up like a car hood:

So it has been awhile since I posted about this - the pin is almost finished. It only needs the play field glass and the trim around the play field.

Here are some pics:

Tales from the crypt

All in all it turned out great. I learned a lot that I will translate into my next build. It still needs some trim pieces to be complete, but it plays and I am having too much fun to worry about it at the moment!

Thanks again to Brett for his help making this dream a reality!
