Virtua Fighter/Neotec 25E sync

well got my Virtua Fighter today, I dropped the Neo 25E monitor in and sure enough it's got some vertical scrolling like it has no V-Sync.

I don't know dick about Neotec monitors, but I find it strange that there's 2 pins on the signal connector spliced to the Sync wire coming off the board rather than just running to a Comp Sync on the chassis.

I've heard from 3 different sources now that Virtua Fighter's sync is "different". I don't understand to which magnitude that can be, but I figured I'd throw this out there to see if anyone's combatted such a thing before.

I'll probably consult the manual for it, if I can find one. I won't be able to mess with the machine again until I get into work again tomorrow.

EDIT: I now realize this is probably more of a Monitor section topic. not sure if mods delete these.

Okay, I could only find a Virtua 2 manual, so take this for what it's worth.

Find the video connector from the PCB. It outputs as:

1 - Red
2 - Green
3 - Blue
4 - Sync
5 - Ground

The 25E is a Medium Resolution monitor. The inputs are:

Red
Green
Blue
Ground
V Sync
H Sync

Now, you should hook your sync up to the H Sync only, I believe. If it doesn't work that way, you can try jumpering it to the V Sync also.

The flowchart lists some parts to check if you can't get it to sync...

yeah, the original video plug has been hacked off. the wires are mated to some other butchered plug (the .156 molex type -- the original was probably the much smaller Japanese type) but I know the color codings for them already. the blue/white wire's the sync.

I'll just lop them off and build a fresh connector to get the splices out.

these don't require isolation transformers do they? I didn't see any warnings in the manual, but in some other search thread I found cadillacman said not to run these without an iso.

the way the Sega cab is wired it runs off the PSU, so I guess if it wasn't safe to do it'd be blown up by now yes? :)

Maybe. Look at the chassis power input section to see if there is an on-chassis isolation. It's usually easy to see, as the traces go to a transformer and then out the other side with no connection to the rest of the chassis...

I've determined it doesn't need an isolation transformer.

I rebuilt the signal harness, I ran it to just the H-S, which meant I got a lot closer than where I was, but it still rolled.

I then tried jumpering the V-sync to the H-sync, and that brought me back to the wicked roll with blue lines almost like retrace lines in the screen (probably just cause of VF's background color)

there's a lot of adjustment pots on the chassis itself, I'll probably pull up that manual again to see if I can find out what does what.

mecha are you sure youve picked the right wires for video ground/sync?

I have experience with thw original virtuafighter let me tell ya lol

originally on the nanao monitor wiring input, white is video ground( not sync like on every other damn wiring setup) and the blue/white stripe wire is actually the sync wire..

Im thinking mabye you have video ground and sync confused.( lets hope lol)

It could be theres a monitor or boardset issue or someething..hell who knows.

MOD- the 25E is a med res monitor right??? I think e=ega but we shall see lol

yeah, I already had the wiring colors down. it's EGA. Chad once told me about Neotec's fucked up nomenclature with their model numbers... I can get behind the 2500 and 2501 (which are CGA and EGA respectively) but this 25E shit is stupid lol.

I think I have the cure for the problem however, I'll just trade out the U5000 from my Blitz 99 into this and throw the Neo in there, I'm sure the Neo will be a little more friendly with the sync there.. considering the frame has a Midway Games label on it.

what's probably going to be amusing to the lot of you is that I intend on running MAME in this Virtua Fighter cab. I'm just mulling over ways to get a 6 button layout without molesting the original CP.

If the cp/cpo is super nice and your gonna end up drilling the thing and change it up lmk!!

id trade ya cps and some cash etc.. Mine is o.k. but the edge is starting to wear.

I've seen people add wood CPs to those, that's the route I'd entertain going above all else. the way the 3 buttons are aligned per player now isn't very 6 button fighter friendly, so I won't be molesting that lol

well, time to revisit this. I got a JROK Sync Cleaner, I figured it worked wonder on the Ripper Ribbit redemption game we got, and uh... yeah, it didn't work for Virtua Fighter.

mysteriously, and I mean MYSTERIOUSLY, I can't get the Sync LED to light up on the cleaner board when I hook up the blue/white wire (which is supposed to be the sync wire) and as such the screen is a distorted mess. hook up white, the Sync light comes on, but still can't get it to sync up.

I've tried several variations of jumpering the VS with the C/HS and running it on just the C/HS, all of which turn up the same nonsensical result.

so, I'm guesstimating that if the JROK Sync Cleaner couldn't fix it... Virtua Fighter just damn well wasn't meant to be played on a Neotec monitor. lol

the other likelihood is maybe the game runs positive sync, while the Neo is stuck in negative.

could be man. When i got my v fighter it was running an aborted mess of hacked wiring, a k7000 tube and yoke, with a neotec chassis of some sort, and it didnt work lol. I got lucky enough to find gatordad who at the time was killing a super rough v fighter, so i got the original nanao monitor and the wiring harness, so it was a bolt and plug and i was back the way it should be.

Im pretty damn sure the blue/wht is sync. Ive had several nanao monitors and everytime its only synces with the blue wht as sync and white as video ground.

That sucks you just have some parts that wont play togther. Thats how it goes sometimes i suppose.

yeah, well I swapped the Neo and U5000 around again... gonna try the Sync Cleaner with Positive Sync I guess.

the Neotecs supposedly can do positive, but how, I don't know. I genuinely can't find shit about those monitors anywhere. I probably could've just called their tech department, but we'll see lol

I should dip into one of the other many Sega games we have around... like Virtua Cop perhaps to find out what the damn wire color REALLY is. I'm so confused...

I officially give up on this. I didn't bother trying negative sync with the U5000 since I assumed I'll get the same result as I did with negative on the Neo 25E.

in fact now for some reason I don't even get the Sync light to light up on the Sync Cleaner board anymore.

guess I'll toss it in storage, maybe sell it off without the monitors it came with since they're worthless to it anyway.
