Vinyl over primer or bare wood?

I'm restoring a Pac-Man cab and I finally finished filling and sanding. I've bought the full set of vinyl decals (I know, should have done stencils). Now I'm wondering... should I prime the wood before applying the decals, or just apply them directly to the bare wood? If I prime, how many coats, and do I sand between coats?

Primed, even painted, yes.

Sand with fine paper to ensure smooth.

cab prep is the key with applying vinyl. The slightest blemish will show through on the final work. Definitely prime and sand the cab before applying the vinyl. If it were me, I'd also hit it with a coat of yellow paint after the primer.
