I've got a couple of atari reproduction/restores I'm doing that are starting with clean MDF sides, and being that I don't have the money for vinyl right now I was wondering if painting the sides black and possibly applying it later would be a bad idea? Is it preferable to apply it on bare wood?

My gut feeling is no it's not a problem given the color and as long as the paint is bound well to the wood, but I thought I'd throw the question out there.

If you use actual oil base paint make sure you give it enough time to out-gas before applying the vinyl.

Ok sounds like I'll paint it, it'll have plenty of time to cure as it may be quite a while before I invest in any vinyl, right now I just want to get them complete and working.
