Vindicators Part II back into Gauntlet I/II?

I have a Vindicators Part II machine that functions, with some intermittent issues. I would like to regress it to its Gauntlet origins, maybe running both Gauntlet and Gauntlet II. Which is the "best" way to get to where I am going?

I understand the emulation route, in basic terms, as well as understanding the more purist route, of acquiring the PCB with the game ROMS.

I would ask for input from those in the know, or that have perhaps done this in one form or another, or from anyone with a thought or information.

Appreciate the effort,
Ray~

your cab is wired for gauntlet so its a matter of just finding a board and a control panel.

As for any other form of playing gauntlet in your cab, I would think it would be a serious ammount of work to make it run mame or trying to drop in a 10xx in 1 pcb. So your really want to think hard before you go that route.

Mr. Bill,

Thanks much for the clarification; its what I needed.

Would the same be true of a Gauntlet II board? I recall something about a necessary daughter board, etc..

Ideally I would have both boards in the cabinet, and the ability to switch between the two; is that feasible/realistic? Is there a better way than a hard switch?

Thanks again,
Ray~

All three games use the same exact motherboard. I've taken a Vindicators Part 2 kit off a board and converted it back to Gauntlet. Lot's of ROMs to burn though....

Matt,

What about the switching between the two, or three even? Is the best way through multiple boards in the cabinet and a hard switch?

Well, when changing between Gauntlet and Vindicators you have to swap control panels anyway.... So I don't see any real advantage to doing any fancy wiring to swap between PCBs. Just mount all three boards in a stack, and then you can simply pop the harness on to the game you want to play.
Oh, and there is a way to get both Gauntlet and Gauntlet II running on the same board: http://www.mk64.com/ron/gauntlet.html , but that takes some work.

If you can find someone who has been able to do the G1+G2 hack on 1 board, you should go that route.

Gauntlet boards can be somewhat fragile. So you really don't want to be converting the cab too often.

My thanks gentlemen. Now I have yet another project to plan, and not get a chance to work on.

I do plan to go the board hack route, certainly. EPROMS are not an issue- I have not worked directly with burning, etc., but I feel it is well within my capabilities to learn.

Now, I just need get a G1 or G2 board, preferably the latter, some ROMS and a burner and eraser. Anyone have a spare burner and/or eraser? Can you help a brother out?

Want to do it under OS X, so a shareware utility and USB burner is the way to go, as I see it.

Any other ideas, suggestions, comments about my mom, etc.?

Thanks again,
Ray~

One of the problems with Gauntlet boards is that they used crappy single-wipe sockets. If you're burning new EPROMs, you should bend the legs inward (they usually flair slightly outward on NOS EPROMs) before plugging them in the sockets so that they'll make decent contact. If you don't do that you'll find the board to be very unreliable (resetting all the time).

Yeah, that would be the way to go - if such a thing existed :) Remember, EPROMs are pretty dated in today's technology. USB and EPROMs existed in totally different times - much the same way as you're unlikely to find a combination Beta VCR and Blu-Ray burner, you're unlikely to find an EPROM programmer that "just works" with USB on a modern operating system. The couple of USB EPROM burners I've seen have been very limited, only working with Windows, with no Linux or OS X support.

If you need a bunch of ROMs burned, just give me a shout, I've got a burner and plenty of blanks. The burner I have functions under MS-DOS, and exists as an ISA card...

Ian,

Yes, you speak the truth, from what I read about the USB burners and OS X. It boggles the mind that there is no viable/simple option in Linux.

Oooo.... that is a HUGE offer you make! I feel that I should not take advantage, but what would you like for such a service? I would need ALL the ROMs, as well as the particulars on the page that mattosborn listed above; http://www.mk64.com/ron/gauntlet.html

Wow! The thought of so many huge hurdles that would eleviate, and get me at the door of a functioning Gauntlet machine gets me excited!

Thanks so much for the offer, and do let me know if its over the top.

Ray~

That is not to imply I need the other electronic components, etc., just the complete board ROM set, and whatever additional ROMs are necessary (ok, I didn't read the linked page in detail.)

Well, perhaps I scarred Ian away by attempting to take advantage. I apologize if that was the case- it was in no way my intention. Kind of got excited and knee jerked a response. Again, no offense.

Anyone offer a service of merit for such things as ROM burning, anyone that you might recommend?

Thanks all,
R~
