[video] How to update RFM to version 1.6 (Pinball 2000)

I updated my RFM to 1.6 yesterday and it went less than smooth. The first problem I had was the computer was unable to connect to the RFM. I discovered that the serial port on the RFM computer was plugged incorrectly into the Pin2k mobo. So, I had to pull the computer out and properly make the right connection to the serial plug to "P1" with the ribbon cable on the mobo. It was plugged into "P2". Ugh!

After that I was able to connect to the RFM but then I kept getting an error 7 when I tried to update. I did some research and found out that when the P2K Update manager scans for updates it moves the EXE file with the update to the PIN2K folder on the C: drive but doesn't extract it. So, the game was trying to install the EXE file. Ugh! So, I had to manually run the EXE file to extract the files and then go back to the update manager and then it finally worked.

Anyways, just thought I would share as it was a pain and maybe this will help someone else later. I thought this would take ten minutes it took me about 3 hours of troubleshooting!

I used Windows 2000

I used Windows 2000 on the laptop and the install was incredibly simple. I loaned my computer to a friend and he did his as well. Maybe XP made it more difficult? Anyway, thanks for sharing!

I did the update with Windows 98. The biggest problem I had was my Pin2K computer was setup incorrectly from the factory. The serial port was plugged into the motherboard in the wrong spot!
 
John, what is the benefit of updating to 1.6? thx

I was running 1.4 and I really don't think I gained much of anything. I just did it so I had the most recent version. My game does occasionally (rarely, but it has happened) reset so I am hoping the 1.6 update has some undocumented fixes.

I updated RFM to 1.6 when I converted my EP1 and it went very smoothly on Windows XP with a USB->Serial adapter. I had to change the COM port of the USB adapter to use COM1 but other than that it was pretty straight forward.
