Video: How to discharge your monitor

one of the most common misconceptions people have about discharging is the one you made as well. The capacitance isn't in the anode wire, its in the tube itself. IOW, when you pop the anode off like that, there is still a real possibility of a charge left in the tube. You can touch the anode wire all day long, but reach up and touch the anode hole in the monitor, and chances are it'll give you a good shock still. The anode wire is only hot because its connected to the tube.
I use a real small screwdriver, and after the anode cup is removed i just let the screwdriver sit in the hole for a couple of minutes to make sure the tube is completely discharged.

I've been shocked when reassembling a monitor chassis. My hand got to close to the hole and bam! Now I always discharge it a couple times prior to disassembly and again before I reassemble. - Barry

I generally do as well but this time it popped off. If it pops off like that I usually discharge the hole as well... Learned that the hard way. I'll be remaking this video when I get my HD cam and I'll go into better detail then!

Which is exactly why I would NEVER post an instructional video of any kind on YouTube, unless I knew exactly WTF I was doing. The possibility of disseminating incorrect/inaccurate/incomplete information that might lead someone to hurt themselves just puts you at risk.

Plus, why re-invent the wheel? There are already plenty of instructional videos on YouTube on how to discharge a monitor.

Also, the video was not all that clear and perhaps could have used a bit of editing to help it along.

All that being said, I applaud you for taking the time to do it. But perhaps it would be better suited for a blog entry or a section on your arcade-related website, or something along those lines.

I removed the video, when I get a new cam I'll make it more clear, descriptive and add subtitles/warnings etc.
