Hey guys, I am hosting my fourth VGO Funspot Arcade tourney next Saturday Oct 3. Start time is 1pm EST. Maybe some of you guys can make it?

It's totally casual and fun. Prizes, etc. I anticipate a lot of local collectors, some arcade high score gods, and listeners of my podcast to be attending. It's gonna be lots of fun! Beer, prizes and pizza after the event.

Pictures from the past events and details can be found here:

Overview:

The next event is Oct. 3, 2009 start time 1pm EST!!!

Our Fourth Semi-Annual Classic Gaming Tournament is coming up and will be on Oct. 3, 2009. Start time is 1pm EST. It should be awesome! The event will take place at the Funspot Arcade (as seen in the feature film King of Kong)!

As usual, it should be a kick-butt event. There is no entry fee or any of that BS. We only ask that you bring a "prize". This can be anything game related. An Xbox 360, PS3, or Wii game (new or used), memorbilia, game related goodies, etc. Your donation will be used in the prize pool. The winners will get to pick from these prizes.

As always, I'll supply certificates, etc.

If you want to attend, I'd appreciate an e-mail.

Be sure to check out the Leader Board to see our past scores and also check out the media section for photos and a video!

What is the Video Game Outsiders Classic Gaming Tournament?

The Video Game Outisiders Classic Gaming Tournament is a small, casual, and fun classic gaming tournament for listeners of the Video Game Outsiders podcast. This tournament is mostly for very casual gamers who do not take gaming too seriously. This is a semi-annual event taking place every spring and fall. Good times!

What are the rules for the tournament? Round time, total score calculation, etc.

I've tried to put together one of these myself but the arcade I wanted to do it at is about an hour away and it was proving too difficult to set it up. The tentative rules I had come up with is have the number of machines in the competition be more than or equal to the number of players, then have each player on a different machine each round, have the round end either when their lives run out or when they reach a time limit (3-5 minutes), and then take their score from that game and add it to their total score. Once all players have played all games, all of each player's scores are added together to tabulate their final score. The top 4 players would then enter a sort of final four where each player chooses a game to have in the final 4 round, and each player would play each game once.

I'm not sure how well that would've played out, but I think it would've been pretty fun. Maybe one day when I have enough of my own machines I could just run it at my house.

We keep it pretty simple. Everyone gets to play one game of each title. That's right, you play each game one time. Your score is recorded. The top three from each game gets a prize and a certificate.

But do you have a time limit for each round? What if you have Billy Mitchell show up and take 28 hours on one machine?

With Robotron in the rotation, 28 hours would I'm sure be much less than some people can play Robotron for... Or Asteroids, you can milk the UFOs for as long as you can stay awake. I'm sure there are some sort of time limits or general rules (no milking the UFOs, etc etc.)

It's a VERY casual event. It's not like that. Don Hayes has come to every one. He doesn't play the games that he is REALLY good at.
