I was wondering what people thoughts are about VGA. Do people really want VGA Games? or is VGA just a bunch of BS.. In my town I have never seen any VGA games in any of the Game stores or Classic games shops. Recently I have been buy sealed games and was wondering if i should pay to get them rated by VGA or if it is a waist of time and money.. Any one with any thoughts ?

Thank you

Oh really I thought this thread was " General Arcade and Videogame Discussions" VGA Games dont count and videogame discussions?

Yeah, I was on DigitPress when some asshole forum member there thought starting this was a great idea. 90% of the members thought he was insane, that it was a bad idea, and it would never work- but look at it now. I do not know if the member there who proposed that has anything to do with VGA, but hearing that guy talk about it was the first I had ever heard about grading sealed video games.

It looks like you can get opened ones graded too, but when there was first talk it was sealed games only.

I guess it's as legit as comic, action figure, and trading card grading. I don't particularly like it, probably because I'm not that breed of collector. I always thought video games were for playing and not being locked away in a sealed container- but not every one agrees.

Paying for the premium of having some shut-in nerd "grade" my games, is not something I wish to pay for either as a seller or a buyer.

It's either poor/average/good/excellent or NIB...if you need something locked away in a special plastic case with some big "rating" out of 100 some dork in his parents basement came up with, you have issues and you're long past the simple hoarder/collector phase and into Uber Nerd-dom.

At that point, someone REALLY REALLY needs to drag your ass to the strippers...and scare some goddamn sense into you!

Here's my one cent (because I'm a newbie to most of the hobby) but the way I look at it is this:

There are two factors that affect how I would feel about this, and the first is what is my purpose for collecting? If it is purely for resell value, than just like comic-books and coins, a rating would certainly solidify the resell value; but then that brings us to the second point...

How legitimate is this ratings "authority"? Like IJTFCinder said, if this is just some nerd in the basement handing out essentially made-up numbers for a fee, then the ratings carry no weight and mean absolutley nothing.

I have never heard of the organization (which doesn't mean much because of my newbie-ness), but it looks like someone one-day just splashed up a FrontPage site and decided to call themselves a ratings company.

Now I coud be totally off-base, and no insult is intended, but that is what me -- a layman in this field -- thinks... and that is not a good thing for them as it affects their reputation.

I was going to have them verify an earthbound for SNES as new. Game was never shrinkwraped just a box no seal. They told me they had to open it to verify that it was new, since then I no longer deal or recommend them.

How can you open a game then give it a grading of "new". I just dont understand. I sold it for about 2k anyway.

I just re-read my post after eating lunch and I realize my post comes across a bit harsh (lesson: never post when hungry).

What I actually meant to say is that before they can claim to be a rating authority, they need to establish themselves as experts in their field.

If I get my game rated by them and then take my game to a Pawn Shop and say "My game has such and such a rating with VGA", will the Pawn Shop laugh in my face and say "rated by who?!" or will they take it seriously?

From my angle, they do not yet seem to have established themself, and therefore are putting the cart before the horse to turn a phrase.

Nice idea, but poorly executed.

They're not on Wikipedia either.

Nothing is legit until it's on Wikipedia :D

thanks for your thoughts, I am a new collector and I have never seen VGA games in local stores. I have only seen them on Ebay and I didnt know much about them

I would say that it's only going to matter to some people, and not enough to make much difference...so I personally wouldn't see the purpose of getting anything graded.

It is easy to look at, really. This business is trying to pass off console games as the next gotta have it investment opportunity. AKA "Safeguard your investment, let us put our stamp of approval on it. Now fork over the money."

Are console games an investment? No, no, and no. You would be better off flushing the money down the toilet.

Case in point, look at the comic market. Grading and sealing used to be a good way for the average collector to safeguard their stuff. Demand for "comics-as-collectables" rode off a cliff, and now these graded games bring the same minimal sales as non graded items. Often selling for less than even the cost of getting them graded in the first place.

Use the cash to buy more retro games that you like, or start saving for some of the newer systems in the pipe.

I collect some of the vintage Star Wars memorabilia: action figures, playsets. Anyways, in the collecting communtiy, we have these clowns called the AFA. It looks like the same M.O. as VGA. I wonder if his brother, cousin, brother's roommate started this ruse?

These companies are a farce! I know for a fact that AFA was created by a dealer to give his merchandise a markup (usually a BIG markup)! Like other have said... whom gives them the authority to *grade* my figures? What makes you better than me? This guy's don't give a rat's ass about the collecting aspect, it's all about the coin and what they can bring. Sort of like the schister dealers at used car lots!

It's unfortunate that people do fall for this marketing ploy as a buyer and seller. My advice....I would avoid at ALL costs!

It's the same people...check the footer of the VGA page or compare the two sites:

http://www.vggrader.com/
http://www.toygrader.com/

Gotta admit, it's a pretty good scam.
