Very odd WG6100 problem - colors off due to monitor orientation

Pulling my hair out for a few days. Finally narrowed it down to this:

When the monitor is oriented as it is supposed to be in Tempest, the colors are off - looks like a degaus or purity issue but it's not because, when it's rotated horizontally OR the other way vertically (upside down for Tempest no pic of that here), the colors are all spot on.

WTF, over.

Just tried a rejuv, along with testing for the G and HK shorts - nothing changed and no shorts detected.

Also, rotating the yoke itself does NOT produce similar results - only when you rotate the entire monitor.

Put the monitor in the poison you want and move the yoke back and forth.

Have already tried all sorts of yoke movement and nothing gets the colors right when it's in the "correct" position.

Again, it's all fine in 3 positions, just not in the one position it is supposed to be in. And the orientation of the monitor (East, North, etc.) also makes no difference.

Very odd one.

Rejuv should not be used as a troubleshooting technique. It is a destructive process that burns off the top layer of the guns. You only want to use it as a last resort for a dim picture, when you are sure it isn't anything else. Otherwise you're just aging the tube faster.

Make sure the degauss circuit on the deflection board is working. It is there to prevent this issue. When the monitor is initially powered on, a blast of current is sent through the degauss coil, which should neutralize any residual effects from the earth's magnetic field.

If you move the monitor with respect to the earth, that can change. But power cycling the monitor should normally fix that (with a 10 minute or so break between power cycles, to let the PTC cool down, which is the black square thing that clamps off the current to the degauss coil, as it warms up.)

Check the solder joints for the 3 pins of the PTC, those very frequently loosen up. And ohm out the degauss coil itself, to make sure it isn't broken. Also, make sure the PTC is working, as it should get hot to the touch when left on for a few minutes. Also, test D106, D107, C106, and R106.

I should have mentioned degaus. I have two different chassis and both produce this same result and on the original chassis I reflowed all the components for the degaus circuit, thinking it was that.

Guessing the coil itself is good/not shorted as no fuse blows and the colors are good in the other positions so degaus must be taking place at power-up.

Testing the coil itself for continuity, it does show continuity but NOT to the frame, so it's not shorted there.

I've had this on our 6100s where in the vector room, if they're oriented so that the game is facing the west or east walls, the colors are all screwed up. North or South? Perfectly fine. No idea. Guessing there's some kind of interference issue exterior to the monitors themselves. I just face them north south. Lol.

+1. You definitely shouldn't have rejuved it. Did you hit it with a degaussing coil? Not one of those crappy wands.

Have you tried to degauss it manually with the monitor in the position you want it?

Swap the monitor with one in a horizontal game, lol. (Got a Space Duel? Haha.) :)

Yeah, that was my next thought as well. Or use a corded drill, or anything else with an AC motor, if you don't have a coil.

this is exactly a purity issue. this came from Star Wars or Space Duel, the purity is adjusted for it to be run in horizontal orientation.

Came from a Tempest w/ mild Tempest burn and matching serials to the main cab. How would you account for the colors being fine when it's "upside down" then? The *only* of the four orientations it's not fine in is the one it is, of course, supposed to be in for Tempest.

then adjust the purity rings but mark the original positions first

have a great day
