Vectrex Warrior and Sundance

Just yesterday (August 8th) I got an update from Fury saying there are still some left....

Hello Vectrex Fans : )

SUNDANCE
On schedule - just 3 weeks away! If you haven't pre-ordered yet, please do it! You get a free iron-on
transfer for pre-ordering. Sundance now has 4 different game modes (originally only 3 were planned).
The game is super fun with 1 or 2 players!

WARRIOR - Last Call!
There are 7 Warrior games remaining for pre-order, #'s 93-99 (#100 was sold early by request).
Several people have requested that I hold a game for them, but at this point with so few remaining
and my desire to sell this out, payment is required. These will sell first-come first-served,
so please get your payment in as soon as possible. I am not planning a second run of these.
It's too expensive to have the overlays made with a minimum 100 units at this cost, and
I will not sell this game in a stripped down version primarily because the overlay defines the
entire play area. Please hurry!

Next email update will be when Sundance is released at the end of the month.
The Sundance web page will be updated prior to the release (additional screenshots, etc).

Crap, sorry I should have checked the site itself. You're right, they're all gone. Sorry man.

I've had my pre-order in for Warrior for a while now...I'm sorry that you heard about it late. Same thing happened to me with the ZVG.

I'll definitely get Sundance too. Not even just because it's a good conversation piece, but I'm interested to see what George does with the gameplay!

I believe George said there are 4 playable versions of the Sundance.

Yeah, that's what I heard too... Maybe, he counts it like this: 1 player mode, 2 player mode, etc., etc... It might be a good fit for the Vectrex, since the control panels can replicate the Sundance # pad looking controls with the 8-way joystick and buttons. I like that he's been adding new features to the classic Cinematronics games.

He did the same for Warrior. Now the Vectrex version has a form of single player campaign! I wonder if he added new character designs for each of the 7 enemies...

These remakes seem to be extremely faithful and high quality, I always appreciate a good remake with a twist! Vectrex Arcade System indeed.

I can't figure out how he's going to map the keypad to a Vectrex controller though. I guess up+1,2,3 and then middle+1,2,3 and then down+1,2,3 to replicate the grid? I don't think that would work very well though.

I guess that would be one way to do it, but then the game would start feeling like Defender!

Luckily, the Vectrex has that 8-way analog/digital joystick... I sent him a message about the controls a week or so ago. I asked, "Would the joystick be tilted in the specific direction matching the grid square that you want opened and use a button to fire through that black hole?" He said that was absolutely right. So, technically there are 9 directions possible to match the 9 squares along with the button 4 to intercept suns.

For instance: hold "down" on the joystick, then the bottom grid square black hole opens up and press 4 to fire through it. Hold "up" on the joystick, then the top grid square black hole opens up, and press 4 to fire through it.

Each direction on the joystick coincides with a square on the grid, including when the joystick is neutral, so you can open the center black hole. George thinks that it works better than a matrix of buttons like a number pad, but I guess we'll have to wait and see!

Sorry for the noob question, are these ports of games to the classic vertrex console or those guys made clone consoles with a single game in it?

Ooo your wife spoils you! Add another game to the long list of desirable vectors...Lucky lucky. My birthday is in early October, so George said I can get the game a little earlier... naa naa naa naa, naa naa!

@tigerstyle: You better be ready to read! The Vectrex is loosely a console system, but is comparable in a lot of ways to classic black and white vector arcade games (some color with overlays), so that's why it's called the Vectrex Arcade System. It's much easier to carry around though, so that's part of its appeal.

However, the Vectrex is a cartridge based system. Much like the SNK Neo Geo MVS or AES, you can switch out cartridges to play a different game. Granted, the Vectrex only has one cartridge slot, so no multiple MVS cart switching (I would LOVE that).

Warrior and Sundance are enhanced remakes of the original Vectorbeam/Cinematronics arcade games. Each game has a respective cartridge. Each cartridge holds the best possible home arcade port of each game without going the Vector MAME route(or just plain MAME, but you want REAL vector graphics, right?). Otherwise, you have to chase down the original cabs (good luck with that). They're "enhanced" remakes because of added features that make the games more accessible and new modes that increase gameplay value and replay-ability.

Plus, the overlay for Warrior is an essential part of the gameplay. It creates the playfield that the players play on. I'd suspect that most KLOV members would agree with me if I said the Warrior overlay is one of the most stylish and creatively designed overlays in classic arcade game history. Overlays were a charming feature in the original GCE Vectrex games/arcade ports. Some of which were almost as useful as the Warrior overlay.

My favorite GCE-era overlays would have to be: Star Castle, Solar Quest/Space Wars, Minestorm, Armor Attack, Cosmic Chasm, Scramble, Web Wars, Fortress of Narzod, Bedlam, Rip Off, and Pole Position.

Sorry about the long document guys! The Vectrex is one of my favorite systems, so I just churn out info about it whenever I get the opportunity.

Yes Vectrex is awesome. I have the multi cart. I would really like to find some overlays for Star Castle, Armor Attack, and Scramble

Wish I could help you there. I have doubles of Armor Attack and Scramble, but my "lesser" Scramble copy is loose and covered in scratches with a beat up cart. A real Ebay mistake. My second Armor Attack (both of which are in pretty great shape) is actually part of my girlfriend's birthday present. She LOVES that game. Especially since it has a great co-op 2 player mode.

My complete Star Castle is a prized possession though, I looked for that game for a solid year until I found a real "grail".

I think that's partly why I'm so stoked about Warrior and Sundance...Simultaneous 2 player Vs. mode!

Wish I lived closer to ya, I would have to beg to come over and at least play every game you got! :D

Your not that far away. If your ever in town your welcome to come play the arcades and vectrex. Maybe I will have quantum finished by then. My search goes on for a upright dedicated Warrior. Someday!!

That means a lot! I didn't mean to impose, but I appreciate the hospitality! I've only seen a few of the games you have in person. Played a bunch on MAME and other emulators (or ports), but of course it's never the same.

I will definitely consider this offer. You must be pretty good at keeping all of those machines working since you have so many!

I'd feel privileged enough to even own one or two of the machines in your collection. That must have been a ton of work...

I guess that's the great thing about this hobby, it can be easy to make new friends when everyone is into the same stuff as you are! I might be new here, but I can tell that this is a real community!

Sorry to be responding so late.

Just to clarify, players control the opening of the hatches in Sundance with the joystick in conjunction with Button 4. For example, the top-right hatch is opened by moving the joystick to the top-right and pressing Button 4. The center hatch is opened with the joystick in the neutral position, so you would just push Button 4. Novas will be fired with Button 3. The various game modes in Sundance have a similar feel to Space Wars. I am for the first time using the Vectrex's built-in player/game selector screen that is present in many of the original GCE Vectrex releases (like Space Wars). The 4 game modes will differ between the 1 and 2 player games. So, technically you could say there are 8 different game modes, but I'm still finishing up some details so none of that is set in stone yet.

War of the Worlds and Sundance are remakes.
Warrior (2-player) is a clone.
Warrior (1-player) is an expansion, exclusive to the Vectrex.
(Both versions of Warrior are on the same cartridge)

Any other questions, please feel free to ask.

George
