I have a battlezone with a monitor problem.

The picture is to big (blooming)> i bought a replacement hv diode from arcade shop.

As i wait for the diode in the mail, I have 2 questions.

What is the best way to discharge the monitor. (screw driver/ground probe under the suction cup on tube to to ground idea, or ?) do i need a resister inline, or is that not needed. I heard it was not needed.(if yes, what value) or does rip off shack sell a probe to buy?

Also the picture is alot darker in the middle of the screen. will the hv diode replacement fix that problem?

any place to buy the monitor green tint gel also?

thanks
chris

Those black & white vector monitors discharge VERY quickly on their own......usually after around 30 seconds from power down, their empty.

The dark spot in the middle of the screen sounds strange. I doubt the high voltage diode will fix that. Have you pulled the face of the Battlezone off. I know it sounds crazy, but I've seen dirt/grim build up on the face of the tube causing this effect. Also, bad screen burn can cause this look.

The color film overlay.....

I agree with the idea that it may be dirt. My Asteroids Deluxe with FILTHY and it had the same effect.

I have had TERRIBLE luck using the screwdriver discharge on BW vectors. Seems like I always blow out the HV diode. Since you are replacing yours anyway, that shouldn't be a concern.

I know that Wizzes Workshop used to sell the gels but I haven't visited his site in a long time. The dark area sounds odd. Since you don't say how large the area is I would guess two things given that it is not dirt:

1. If the "area" is 1/4 inch or less, you have "Spot Killer" burn. You need a tube.
2. If the "area" is significantly larger, you just have plain old "Screen Burn". You need a tube.

Lets just hope it is dirt on the screen, gel, or mirror.

thanks guys

I will let you know what happens.

I hope my diode makes it on friday, since my "day job" is slow.

I will take a before and after picture and post on here.

also Thanks for the link on the color gel..

stay tuned for the conclusion and pictures.

Diode, diode, diode, diode!

Here are a few extra "e"'s for you... e e e e e e e e e e e e e

Good luck with the repair!

bz fixed- damn nice picture - see photos.

My bz is fixed - $15 dollars later.

HV DIODE replaced, Picture looks awsome.

I love this game. Not very good, but getting better.

Had a small group over for dinner and games.

Not one problem - All my games were on for 4-5 hours. (a few tokens got stuck on various games)

Pictures do not do justice.

Thanks
chris

Looks great man! BZ is a fun game, awesome 3d graphics for 1980!

If you want to see some technique, search it out, someone here posted videos of playing to one million points.
