Vector MAME (ZVG) for Linux is available

Wow I didn't realize there was a board to use a vector monitor with MAME!

It just occured to me that what would be really awesome, is a board that would allow you to use a laser to project the vectors on a wall from an original vector based game!

Confirmed on:

Ubuntu 10.10 (maveric) 32 bit
Pentium 4, 2.4 Ghz
WG6100 (Space Duel cabinet)

I needed -flipx to reverse the x axis. No other issues.

We're free from DOS at last, thank you!!

want to post instructions? I installed 10.10 with the defaults.

Followed the instructions and I get an error about it not finding libSDL_ttf or something like that... :)

i d like to say if i have offended stevej by my comment i apologize. i wasnt trying to imply that steve or his site had anything to do with the tinfoil hat guy. i 'll remove it

No offense taken :)

I went back and read the posts you were talking about, freaking hilarious :)

Yeah, I tested it on the 6100 in the Tempest tonight ... I will fix the "flipx" bug. Sorry, Looked fine on the oscilloscope...

BTW, how is performance on your rig? Are you getting full speed and sound?

Magic command line incantation:

sudo apt-get install libsdl-ttf2.0-0

If the command line is worrisome, go to Applications -> Ubuntu Software Center, search for mame, and install MameUI. This will resolve all the dependencies including sdlmame and the libsdl-ttf library. Plus you can toy around with games :)

thanks. will try that...

It seems like mame reported 85% for tempest and I don't have sound. That's all defaults except for:
"-video zvg"
"-flipx"
enabling the mouse in mame.ini (my spinner harness works, woohoo!)

Here's some random output from a selection of games. All the games in the high 90's % seem to run fine to me, I couldn't notice the slowdown. The 80% ones have slowdown at various places, only ESB was really unplayable, Black Widow slowed at the level select screen, and MHavoc was only slow at the screen with the mini breakout game. All these games run at 100% on my system (a P4 2.8 Ghz) without a ZVG. I guess the parallel port might be the main factor here? EDIT - sound and mouse support worked right away :)

armora Average speed: 100.03% (13 seconds)
gravitar Average speed: 98.65% (23 seconds)
spacduel Average speed: 100.00% (29 seconds)
esb Average speed: 82.29% (189 seconds)
zektor Average speed: 100.03% (23 seconds)
bzone Average speed: 99.99% (35 seconds)
astdelux Average speed: 99.99% (15 seconds)
aztarac Average speed: 99.86% (50 seconds)
bwidow Average speed: 83.32% (24 seconds)
mhavoc Average speed: 84.73% (35 seconds)
quantum Average speed: 95.53% (48 seconds)
llander Average speed: 100.01% (11 seconds)
tempest Average speed: 97.34% (29 seconds)

BTW, you can easily get rid of the need for the flipx by creating a mame.ini config and putting it in there (change it to 1 or 0, whatever it's not).

EDIT2 - confirmed working on Ubuntu 32bit 9.10.

Cheers,

Dan

No internet access on that system. :(

A few more numbers:

armora 100.01
aztarac 98.30
mhavoc 86.06
startrek 99.62
tacscan 99.98
tempest 97.06
zektor 100.01
astdelux 98.96

Thanks for posting the performance numbers haywood. I"m putting up a fix for the "flipx" bug tonight.

If you want to improve performance on games like Major Havoc, experiment with the -frameskip option. Skipping half the frames (setting of 5) will get me running at 98%, though there is noticeable flicker on the monitor. You may want to find a sweet spot between 0 and 5 that suits you.

I suspect that stripping the installation down and bumping the priority will yield close to 100% for all the games. I'll post my progress when I make some. Thanks again for the Linux port!

They have more in stock now? They were sold out...

Edit: Just noticed that they have some extra ones built: http://www.zektor.com/store/shopping.shtml

they just went up for sale this week I was told. Funny thing is, I emailed them and somebody responded that there is a limit of 5 per person. I'm pretty sure I don't need 5! :)

Here is their actual response: "Yes, we have the last 42 going on sale as of this week. They will be delivered in 2 weeks. It will be a first come, first served opportunity. People who place their orders with payment will be first in line. We are also limiting all orders to five units."

42 is a strange number don't you think?
