I was noticing in VAPS that there is a category for condition. What is used to judge the condition?

  1. What others have told you?
  2. What you think?
  3. You just like to finally have an "A"?

Condition to me means many things:

How pretty is it?
Does it work?
Any water damage or nicks?

I take a composite view when judging. Even if a cab is in excellent cosmetic shape, it can get a C if all the parts are missing. Or a B if all parts are there but it needs to be fixed....

I think you are one of the few...

I was just noticing that a lot of people on VAPS have a A- or better machine, yet, there are no pics in the restoration threads. I guess they could be original machines though...or nobody takes pictures anymore.

I don't rate mine. I am not a video game concours judge.

There are all complete and working. If cosmetic parts are available, I replace them.

I like VAPS, but the rating system is dumb IMHO. I am just glad to see the games still alive

It would be cool to have a form to fill out for various things that calculates the condition...that could be a simple web page i could build..just need all the inputs.

No sarcasm, it's really a great idea. Hard to develop a standard, however, that may be something to look into...

Maybe at least a guideline as to what constitutes what?
A=excellent cosmetic shape, no obvious stratches or damage, works perfectly
B=good cosmetic shape, some minor scratches or damage to the CPO, works perfectly
C=Fair cosmetic shape, large scratches, cracks and/or water damage, and working; good cosmetic shape and NOT working
D=very poor cosmetically, but restorable, non-working
F=part machine only

yeah, something like that could work...or 0-10 scores could be entered for each of the following categories that could have weights (maybe 1 for pcb, cab, art, monitor and .84 for the rest) - (yeah..i've put some thought into this and maybe i'm overthinking it ;) ):

in the end they are all subjective anyway

PCB
-Does the game boot up and run?
*if no sound, use sound section below

-t-molding condition

Side/Kickplate/other Art

Monitor
-exists and powers up?
-all colors firing?
-bright enough?
-picture displays correctly/geometrically accurate?
-does it have burn-in?

-scratches in the glass?
-artwork flaking?
-plastic bezel exists and in good shape?

Control panel overlay
-is it all intact?
-is it clean?

Marquee
-scratches or graffitti?
-artwork still in tact?
-any warpage?

-coin door lights work?

Controls
-buttons/controls exist and work?

if i had to fill all this shit out i would have a blank vaps page

It really could use some work, couldn't it? I PM'ed some issues to admin and mclemore that I came up with trying to use it to find games to bring back on my game haul, but the PM has gone ignored (no "read" receipt). I also tried posting in the suggestion forum but that post was never approved.

I'm sure one person's rating will always differ from another person's rating.

My DK is fully restored in that it's been cleaned inside and out, sanded, repainted, all parts cleaned, new artwork, etc. etc. But it was missing one coin mech when I got it and I acquired a replacement that wasn't identical. Does that automatically bump it down from an A- or whatever to a B? C? It's definitely subjective.

I agree a different rating system may work better, maybe one a little more detailed or that has more variables. However, like Taylor said, if you make it too detailed, that can deter guys from even wanting to rate their games. Either way, I agree that VAPS is not as useful as it is intended to be at its current state.

naw, the questions are just for helping you decide on a 0-10 rating...the idea is to only fill out the ratings for each main component of a machine then an easy formula gives you a score. like i said, its still all subjective...but something like this:

just a thought

Wow, that's pretty cool. I did a mock one for my DK and it came out 91% (A-). :)

How did the rating of the categories work? Are they all weighted the same? Or some more than others?
