I'm looking at buying these two systems locally, I know they both work fine, but the Simpson's game has some minor damage on the wood of the cabinet. What should I expect to pay for them? How much is too much, and what's considered a good deal here? they are both four player dedicated systems.

Cant say for gauntlet, but I would pay no more than $350 for a MINT working Simpsons. Once you play through the game once, it will lose most of its value to you. In your case, I would flash $200 in his face for the Simpsons and call it a day.

Aw, that's sad to hear. It's quite a nostalgic piece from my youth... I remember every time my sister and I found the game, we always had to play it.

It all depends on your age and the nostalgia of the machine. A lot of the older guys state that these Jamma games lose their appeal after you "beat" them but I find that most of the classics lose their appeal after the fourth or fifth repetitive stage.

Assuming the Simpsons cab is a four player I've seen them sell for upwards of $500. The Gauntlet Legends cab used to sell for quite a bit more but it is now down to the same price range. Of course, you location plays a big part in the price and if you are buying the machines with a warranty the price goes up as well.

Both questions - it's worth what you're willing to pay. It doesn't matter what anyone else thinks its worth. If you want it and can afford it buy it. These things are not investments and shouldn't be treated as such. In fact everyone should say to themselves (Here's another one I'll lose money on). It might actually help cure some of the addictions out there.

That advice should be a sticky!

Well, I haven't seen the games yet myself. But, he claims the gauntlet is perfect. Between that and the damage on the Simpson's cabinet, what should I offer for both systems, and what's the most I should pay for the pair?

Tell the seller to set the price. He/she has an idea of what they want and most of the time people like this are simply trying to bait you into offering more money than what they are wanting. And when you come in below their "accepted figure" you automatically piss em off and it's a dead duck deal anyway. Make the seller give YOU a price. And demand pictures. People are liars.

I've said it 100 times - "Make offer" generally doesn't end well.

Simpsons cabs (and PCBs for that matter) are ridiculously overpriced all the time. If I could find a PCB for less than about $70 I would add it to my jamma setup. I guess the popularity of the show continues to drive the price up?

Are these the ones in the Chicago area? If so this guy has been trying to sell for awhile to say the least.

No, they are in my city, I know he has an asking price of 400 obo for the simpsons game, but he hasn't said what he wants for the gauntlet game. I'm going to go have a look at them as soon as the snow clears a bit more.

I've seen Simpsons go from 300-600 normally. It's a great game and replay value as Oryk said is purely dependent on your nostalgia for the game.

For example, Capt. America is practically the same game but it would hold no lasting interest for me. TMNT and Simpsons are what I played as a kid and repetitive or not I like them.

Gauntlet Legends...I've seen these go from maybe $400-600 normally. Those cabs are really cool.

GL? Depending on condition maybe $400, a bit more for one in mint condition. Not sure what it is about those cabs but they hold up very well and many of them are in very good condition.

Some things to look out for with the GL:

1) Make sure that you have the fans in the metal cage working -- if they are missing or disconnected and have been run for any length of time the boards will be in a bad state.

2) Have him turn the GL on and keep it on for a while with you there. You do NOT want the 27" medium res monitor to have any problems because it could be major $$$ to replace/fix. After about 30 min the picture should be as sharp as it was when it was turned on. If the picture looks a bit out of focus you'll need a new flyback and probably cap-kit.

3) While you're burning up the 30 min or so, take the time to go through all of the diagnostics in the game menus.

4) If you do buy the game, spend the extra $40 or so and buy a spare graphics card for the game now while they're available. These are a high failure part and it's cheap insurance. You can buy them here from ToplessZ or from a seller on Ebay. When these are gone when/if your graphics card dies you're SOL.

5) When you buy the game, spend a few minutes and pull out the hard drive, hook it up to your computer and use chdman32 to take a snapshot of the hard drive. The hard drives are another high failure item and leaving a snapshot of the game's hard drive image on your computer for when/if the game's hard drive fails is a great backup plan. It can be a hassle finding the right hard drive image for your game once your hard drive fails so why not spend the 20 min up-front and save yourself a lot of hassle down the road?

This guy just told me he wants $800 for GL. I think I'm going to make an offer on the simpsons game, and tell him to keep GL. Offering $400 for it seems like an insult, even if it is what it's worth.

I paid $350 for my Simpsons (plus two other junk cabs), It was ALMOST mint. Needed a good scrubbing, the soda beneath the plexi cleaned off...and a new marquee, but I was happy.

I got my Gauntlet Legends for $200 practically mint condition. I ended up putting about $200 into it because it was my second machine I ever owned and it had a problem which I couldn't diagnose at the time (+5 on the PSU) and I ended buying an extra board and extra PSU plus tools.

$800 is way too much.

$400-$450 is about right if everything is working well.

It's such a huge cab and pain to move.

I don't personally like those type of games.
But I have seen them around the central valley and bay area
sell for less than $400 most of the time.

Damage to the cab brings the value down.

if this is your first cab, I would turn the game off a time or 2, let it load up.
Just to see if anything weird happens. Play all 4 players, make sure there is no issue
with any controls.
Look in back to make sure everything is secure before you start moving it.

another thing is location, as in are they ina basement where you have to haul or are they in a first floor or garage where moving is easier.. sounds dumb at first, but really ive bought a few games that if i would have known how bad the move was going to be, i would have just left them..

my general rule of thimb is 50-100 for any compolete non working game and 75-150 for any working game, unless its somethingg a little more popular then price goes up form there.. around me a simpsons would still go for 400-500 easy, mabye more if you found the right guy.. not too sure about gauntlet.. however personally, thats a fun game if you get a couple to people to play at once...

so if you can pick both up for a couple hundred or less youll be in good shape... damn monitors are worth a hundo a piece themselves!
