Introducing the Uzebox JAMMA!

DSCN2318-1.jpg

The Uzebox JAMMA is an open source retro-minimalist 8-bit arcade development board based on the Uzebox Project (http://Uzebox.org). Driven by the ATmega644 AVR microcontroller by Atmel, this device can be easily programmed in the C programming language. Video generation, tile generation, and music mixing are done in real time by the ATmega's interrupt routine.

The goal of the Uzebox JAMMA was to make homebrew arcade game development as simple as possible with good enough graphics and sound capabilities for creative games. With the use of SD card storage, games can be shared amongst users and easily loaded onto the Uzebox JAMMA.

Specs:

-64KB program space
-4KB RAM
-2KB EEPROM space (High score saving and "virtual DIP switches")
-SD card support
-Audio amplifier
-ISP interface
-Expansion header
-Running at 28.63636 MHz
-256 simultaneous colors
-4 channel sound engine

Pricing:

Assembled: $80 USD
Kit: $65 USD

CURRENT STATUS: Quantities are low, assembled only boards still available. Will restock soon. Send PM or contact Basement Hobbies (BasementHobbies (at) gmail (dot) com) if you are interested.

Are there any games developed for this platform or any classics that have been converted or ported to it?

At the moment, all of the games currently made for the Uzebox Project are for the Uzebox (home console version). There hasn't been anything for the Uzebox JAMMA yet, but all Uzebox games are mostly compatible with the Uzebox JAMMA.

Seems pretty cool, though I haven't done much with the AVR... and I personally don't have any classic-style games that I'd like to make into an arcade game at the moment. I have thought of doing something similar with the Parallax Propeller (which I'm a huge fan of)... basically making a JAMMA Hydra ( http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/HYDRA_Game_Development_Kit ), but it all goes back to not really having a game that I want to make.

I've been following the development of this product and Uzebox in general for a while now. I would purchase it right now if I had an extra $65. I'll probably pick on up when I do. I'm experienced with Arduino programming, and a few months ago I installed the Uzebox library to try it out, but couldn't make anything worthwhile. I had a lot of issues getting all the different resolutions working on my mac, and that was frustrating to me.

It seems like you're about to sell out of this run. Do you have an ETA for the second run?

The emulator is a bit finicky, not the best in accurately emulating CPU speed and other things. It might have been updated between then and now, but I don't keep track of that. The window size should remain constant, unless you're talking about game resolution.

Oh yeah. I was talking about game resolution. I believe I could only get Mode 2 to work. Everything else gave me some kind of runtime error. I think it may have been a mac thing.
