Ordering shipping supplies online and paying shipping costs to get my shipping supplies sounds like it would rip a hole in the time/space continuum. Also, what do they ship the shipping supplies in?! Sounds like a 2 for 1 deal to me.

You don't pay for the flat rate boxes. In fact, I just had a new stack of large flat rate boxes arrive at my place yesterday.

I believe the numbers he was listing were the shipping cost when you mail the assembled boxes...

That's correct. And that flat rate bubble mailers are $4.95. Sweet deal for mailing Neo Geo carts, small PCBs, flybacks, etc. Weight doesn't matter, so as long as it won't get damaged getting knocked around (wrapped isolation transformer?) you can send it with that envelope.

One note: if you ever receive/order the wrong thing, KEEP IT. If you return it they automatically flag your address as bad (since one of 300 items was returned, right?) and your stuff just stops showing up. You then have to call and get re-authorized for deliveries.

And in typical USPS fashion, they do not tell you your are on "suspension" when you place subsequent orders. You get a tracking email that looks just like a shipment confirmation but if you look closely in status field it says "Call 800-xxx-xxxx"

BAH!

If you ever order the wrong thing, take the stickers off the box and take the box of boxes to your local Post Office.

Mine was happy to get the boxes I wasn't going to be able to use.

They've had this service for years and years. You used to be able to get tape too - but I don't think they have that online anymore.

You have to be careful placing orders, some things are "per each" and other things are "per box". A friend of mine wound up with like 50 boxes of mailers instead of the 50 mailers he thought he was requesting...

Makes too much sense for the USPS Mine looked at me like I brought a box of dead frogs.

Damn, I loved the free tape. Can you even get this tape anymore? I think they stopped providing because everyone used it for sealing boxes, while its intended use was to denote "Priority Mail" on non-Priority Mail boxes.

They stopped with the free tape a few years ago now actually. I'm still bummed out about this as it saved me a lot of money not having to buy packing tape.

I managed to get 6 rolls of tape by getting the order form from the local post office. The tape was listed on the form, so I filled it out and they sent it to me. Maybe try asking the post office for the old order forms?

I have been getting boxes from usps online store for years. Its great because they ship them to you for free and the boxes are free. They stopped with the priority tape a little under 2 years ago. People were using it to seal boxes and it was really only meant to mark a plain box for priority. They even made it super thin (weak) to deter from this but it didnt work, they just used multiple layers. I still get the tape but I get it from the post office. Im in there pretty much every day so they hook me up with da tape.
As far as PCB boxes, I buy them from uline. I got tired of searching for a damn box that a pacman board fits comfortably in. I usually spend about $300-$400 when I order from uline but its worth it to me.

now those were the days, going crazy on a box with pm tape and then taking it to ups... I blame myself for the downfall of the free tape

Nah... blame me...

We still have a couple rolls from years ago. And honestly, I swear when you used to order it online it said "Priority Mail Packing Tape". Which made sense to us because we also ordered those Priority Mail stickers for non-PM boxes. :scratchchin:

Yeah, I always used it to seal the boxes too. I thought that was what it was for, and the markings were just to discourage you from using it on UPS shipments.

Of course, I'm also probably partly to blame. Many years ago, I was in one of those cardboard boat competitions, where you had to make a boat, entirely out of cardboard, and race it in the swimming pool at the high school. Cardboard in and of itself isn't waterproof at all, but if you wrap it securely and completely in layers of Priority Mail tape, it is...

I disagree that the 'Priority Mail Packing Tape' was only intended for marking a package.

They have simple stickers for that.
They WANT you to use it to seal your own packages with- then you HAVE to ship it Priority Mail. I used to see people get stung by this all the time while waiting in line.

I hardly ever use Priority Mail. The boxes are very convenient, but costly for what they add. I receive a fair amount of packages and usually recycle the boxes by direct reuse. There is a shopping center nearby with cardboard-only dumpsters. Nice for scavenging. Staples and Wal-Mart are right down the road also.

You can ship pretty cheaply with Parcel Post and I can't think of a problem I've had with it. If the Priority Mail price is only a dollar or so difference, I'll add it on, but I don't think it adds much to the handling/delivery time.

This is why it is nice to work for a printing company:

Plenty of boxes, tape, butt roll ends of paper, chipboard, skid protectors, and oh yeah SHRINKWRAP!

so I just got my bubble mailers today(max of 15 mailers), anyone know how often you can order them? I dont want to get black listed for over ordering

go crazy. Just ship using the usps website so that if they contact you , you can have them pull up your account. I've got scads of priority mail supplies here in my son's old bedroom so that I can ship stuff. It looks like a mini shipping center. I've got peanuts, old boxes, usps boxes, bubble wrap etc. Need to start selling more stuff to get the room back.
