Using my Playchoice 10 to give Kid Icarus a 2nd chance

I don't know if you guys played Kid Icarus back in the day, but I did and I never completed the 1st level. I blame it mostly on the fact that I got it mail order used from Funcoland with no manual. Also there was never an article about the game in Nintendo Power as the it was too old by the time Nintendo Power came out.

I am still confused about some of the aspects of the game, but I am making progress.

Again, Thanks to 2600 for his awesome adapter!

I bought that for my 3DS and played for a bit. It's nice on the 3DS because you can create a save-game (essentially a snapshot of the in-memory game-state at the time).

Without the 3DS save feature I probably would have given up because that game is hard and I'm a baby. :)

Kid Icarus blows. Anyone who says it's like Metroid is on drugs. As I said in your video comments, it's like Metroid's ugly step-sister. No saves (not even harts and health between lives, for cripes sakes) is real PITA. Good grief, even Super Mario Bros let you start in the middle of the level if you died past halfway.

That said,I do appreciate that you're documenting your efforts to give it a 2nd chance. That's pretty cool.

I also agree that 2600's adapter is awesome. I have the NES Powerpak on it with all 700+ games, and it's friggin AWESOME.

Huh, wish you woulda told me that it arrived. With the way their checkout system works, I had no idea if it ever shipped to you.

Just got it last weekend - still setting it up properly. I appreciate you purchasing it for me.

I plan on shooting a review video of it soon, once I work out all the setup stuff with the freeplay rom and name all my carts.

Well, if I end up buying one for myself, would you set it up for me? All 700 games, etc? I no good with computers.

No problem. How's the Macbook?

Hey Tighe, have you sorted out the games that you said you were having trouble with playing? I thought you mentioned that there was another game that wasn't loading properly - maybe Kirby?

Had that one for my NES. I tended not to like it, but for some reason kept going back to it from time to time. Made it all the way to the final boss once, but couldn't beat him at the time.

No save game though was horrid, never got the initiative to try it again after that marathon run.

It was one of my first NES games BITD. I liked it, but it's been so long since I last fired it up that I can't remember everything that was good/bad. I just remember really enjoying the dungeon sections and in the final level the game becomes a shmup!?!? When I first got to that level I was wishing they had made an entirely separate Kid Icarus game of just that gameplay.

Metroid was my favorite game for NES, but I still loved Kid Icarus. You do get the codes between levels, so it isn't like you have to start over entirely. I distinctly remember how irritating it was to be turned into an eggplant. Even now, when I see eggplant at the grocery store I still think of Kid Icarus. :) It was better than playing Ghosts 'n Goblins. I remember looking at that map on the screen and just wondering who could possibly get to the end.

Back when I was about 14 or 15, I was still playing the shit outta my Sega Master system. A buddy and I had about a 5 hour Zillion marathon going. We had finally mapped out the entire labrynth, and were at the final stage of inputting the auto destruct sequence when we needed to exit the maze. As some of you might know, that's pretty much near the end of the game. As I was navigating my way through the maze while the timer counted down, my buddy got all excited that we were finally going to beat the game and started jumping around. He fell over on to the console, hitting the 'reset' button.

:mad::mad::mad::mad::mad:

I still haven't played Zillion since.

I played a good bit of it back in the day and beat it. Honestly, I don't remember a hell of a lot about it but can't you power up in it? I always thought it was a really cool game. Hard doesn't bother me (ayo).

I remember back in the 80's we got Kid Icarus and my Dad was addicted to it. He would stay up all hours playing it. When the SNES came out he was in love with F-Zero.

I picked up a Kid Icarus cart for my NES last month and agree that it is just as hard as I remembered from playing as a kid. I think I am on the 2nd level, or 3rd... I can't tell. I HATE the fact that if you fall, you die. What kind of BS is that?! The kid has wings damn it!

Kid Icarus is a great game, great music, level design, unusual setup for a platformer. I love the mythology theme. The game can be a little frustrating at first, but it is very rewarding once you get how the game works. I put it in the same category of games as Metroid and Castlevania.

If I remember correctly, you can get a little feather that will save you once when you fall. Very useful!

Got one of 2600's adapters, now I just need to track down a copy of the cart to play it. I'm glad to see it works with the cart, that's the only reason I got the adapter!

I don't understand what the difference is between Kid Icarus and Metroid in terms of the continue/password you can continue as many times as you want just like Metroid. The only difference from Metroid is that you can go back to previous levels in Metroid.

Yes it is Kirby, and there is part I can swap into the adapter to make it work, but I haven't ordered it yet.

But if you want to play our on the Power Pak it works in that.

There was a couple other games, Mega Man 5 I believe too and something else. I will order the past this week.

I am confused about this continue thing, I just press start after I die on the password screen and I can continue. What does this B A B do differently?

Blaster master is another Metroid style game and awesome.

Kid Icarus really isn't much like Metroid as the first level is like ice climber, then you have the dungeon maze, then the over world which is like SMB, then another maze and vertical level followed by a shooter.

I used to love this game as a kid. Played it through continuous enough times to the point where Athena turns Pit into a adult angel at the end (essentially after that nothing changes anymore at all in subsequent runs through).

More recently I've tried to play it again... it's not a bad game by any means, but I find that I play through a few levels or so and then just get bored with it (or die, one of the two).
