Anyone used MAME eeprom dumps to fix a dead EEPROM on their game before? Aside from making sure the version is right, does that work?

Done it many of times. (I'm sure a lot of folks have)
Beings that MAME's ROM dumps are from original ROMs, I use them all the time to reburn bad ROMs.

Yep. But sometimes they don't include Proms, as they code that in the program.

I've done it on Tempest many times to get V.3 so I can cut the # of Eproms on a repair in half.

If they don't have the proms for a particular game, then send them to the MAME team. Then the dumps will be included in the set for us all if we ever need them.

My Moon War lives thanks to MAME and hobbyroms.com

Is this an EEPROM question or a general eprom question. I have used mame eprom images hundreds of times to burn roms. Sometimes you have to be careful as their are different revisions out for some games and mame might not have the one you need. In that case you are kinda stuck burning a whole set.

In general, you can. However, be aware that there are many games that have encrypted or scrambled ROMs such as the Sega System 16 boards that have those silly special CPU blocks. Those make it very difficult to resurrect a board a times.

Sometimes you can pull one of the ROMs, read it, and use ROMIdent to figure out what version the originals are.

This is true, but sometimes you can find the unencrypted ROMs and replace the block with a standard processor.
