Hi there!
I'm working on opening an arcade in about a year, so I'm starting the process of acquiring games. And building cabs from scratch.

Anyway! My question is about Blitz 2000.
I'm looking to buy one from someone, but they've informed me that it's been modified to work on a medium resolution monitor. Would that still work on a CGA to VGA converter chip?
Thanks!

not sure about 2k but iirc blitz has a dip switch that switches from medium to std res or visa versa.

I wouldn't say its "been modified" to work on medium res, that boards default resolution is mid res.

As to wether there is a CGA-VGA converter that will work, not that I've ever seen. All of the cheap Chinese converter boards will only step from 15khz up to 31khz.

Broodwich is correct, the Seattle board that NFL Blitz/Blitz '99/Blitz 2K Gold Edition runs on can be set for 15kzh or 24khz with the dip switches.

Dip Switch Set 2 (U8) :

512 x 256 15khz resolution - SW2 ON, SW3 OFF
512 x 385 24khz resolution - SW2 OFF, SW3 ON

Brian.

So if I changed the dip switch settings would the converter work? Sorry, I'm kind of a newbie when it comes to the converting stuff. Most of the cabs I work with have CRTs.

Yes, that should work, but you will probably end up with a rather ugly display.

If I understand you right, you are taking a game that has a default display of 512 x 385 and then enabling the dips to lower that to 512 x 256 then running it through a CGA to VGA converter to upscale it to 640 x 480 and finally running the result into a LCD display. That is going to be like the difference between driving an old Pinto and a new Mustang, they both get you where you want to go but the level of enjoyment is vastly different.

You will get a workable picture that will let you play the game, though you probably won't enjoy it. It would be better to find a 15khz CRT to put in there and just run it at 512 x 256 over what you are thinking of doing.

If you are asking whether or not you can run Blitz/Blitz 2K set to medium res. on an LCD with a converter then the answer is yes.

The Gonbes GBS-8200 does CGA, EGA, RGB TO VGA.

I use one in a Rush the Rock (medium res only) and it looks quite good on an LCD.

The trick is setting to sharpness very low on the LCD to smooth the edges.
