Absolutely.
I have been trying to get to a FINAL disk image for a bunch of things around the arcade so that I can clone every one of them and just leave a spare in an envelope in every cabinet.
That along with the plans, schematics, and all other details about keeping the things alive (none of which I have written or put together yet for the dozen machines I'm talking about) in case anybody other than me ever cares.
Today's challenge is put together a filtered rom, sample, bios and CHD collection that has the few hundred games I actually ever cared about.
I created an assortment of batch files to filter games to only have what is appropriate (and is worth playing) on any particular cabinet.

Curious to see how big that group of files turns out to be.

It's been a while since I looked, but I think the curated list on my MAME cab is about 225 games.

I'm probably about the same.
I have a few sets of console files also for the Recalbox and MiSTer builds but they don't amount to much comparatively.
Apart from the stuff to make the Daphne/Dirk Simple stuff work the CHDs are the biggest thing going on of course.
What rabbitholes-

@alfonzotan 's suggestions about a second monitor is really the only way to go about finalizing that setup.
The good thing is it is easy to pull off!
The tab key is your best friend.

As a hedge on things screwing up, I always log both the original keystroke setting as a failsafe (5 for player one coin, 1 for player one start, up arrow for joystick up, etc.) and then add in whatever else you want to use.
Has saved me needing to begin with a whole new config file since adopting that approach.

I found a monitor and the right HDMI cable and gave this a shot. Had no problem getting into the control config settings in advmame, but unfortunately, I received no response whatsoever from the cabinet controls as inputs.

I'll take a closer look at the board this weekend and see if I'm missing something on how the Space Duel adapter board thinks about controls.

I have the USBDVG (later revision) with the Astroids/Deluxe PCB adapter, running in an original Asteroids cab (with G05-801 monitor) and Pi4. I updated the DVG bios to the latest V1.14B7 AC version, and set the controls to "Buttons". But I seem to be having several issues, first is that the fonts have these strangle loops all over them (see pic). Also no sound coming out of the cab speakers (yes I have the Pi sound connected to the PCB), and none of the arcade controls seem to be working when the game starts (I need to use a connected keyboard to do anything). I must be doing something stupidly wrong, but not sure what that might be.
Hey @davek did you ever get to the bottom of this? I've just run into the same issue (also on a g05-801). Monitor still works perfectly with a real Asteroids board, just the USB-DVG shows the funny loops on the text. I also can't really find any settings to make the Asteroids bullets super bright like on a real board, anyone have any settings suggestions to help with that?

Have you made any adjustments on the DVG settings page?

There are presets in the "what tube are you using" part of the menu that you should pick whatever gets the best image overall.
I've found that I can usually get close with one of those and then fine tune with the slew and jump rates and get it better.
HV unit proximity and orientation have an enormous effect on image quality.

I am reminded (now that I have unearthed all my vector materials again) that I need to have a go with Robin's vstcm again too while I'm at it.

Is there a secret decoder ring you need to edit advmame.rc? I can get into the file but keys like delete don't work as expected. I am a linux noob.

Thanks

Are you making controller changes? Reassigning keys and such? Best way to do that is via MAME, it'll populate that file for you.

advmame.rc is very confusing in this application, because there are two versions in two different directories, and it's not always clear which one needs to be edited to make things work. We've found that analog controls and some display settings, for instance, have to be set up in /home/pi/.advance/advmame.rc, and general game controls get populated to the advmame.rc file in /usr/local/share/advance/advmame.rc.

I don't remember ever getting the thing to output to both screens at the same time but Will listed above the hidden file you need to work in.

THere are three methods I have used to get files altered.
1. Plug the Pi into your home network and get into it via PC and edit from there (easiest if you can craxk into the Pi that way.)
2. Boot the Pi with a flat screen on hdmi 0, escape out until you get back to command line, change directory into .advance file noted by Will,, and edit from there (least favorite way!)
3. Same as #2 except once in command line, force a gui boot with sudo startx
From there you can get into file manager, in view selwct show hidden files, and then proceed to that file noted by Will.

It is a bear to deal with.

The sudo startx was brilliant! I am now seeing the game on the HDMI display. Thanks!
