So I understand the UPS Store is a tad expensive when it comes to shipping stuff...but this is pure robbery. RetroReject Wanted my Taito Bartop...and I was having a hard time finding a box to ship it in. So I thought I would just take it to the UPS store for packing and shipping. Shipping cost on UPS.com was about $60 to him.

The game weighs about 60 LBS and needs a box in the 24x18x26 range.

Anyone wanna take a guess on what the total bill was gonna be after packing?

How about $364.50! WTF!!! I about pissed my pants laughing at the poor lady. I said fuck it..I'll take the box only. Wanna guess what the 30x30x30 box was? $68 + tax..or about $75!!

I stopped at Uhaul and they had a 150LBS rated box 24x20x34 for $7.99

Man alive...what an absolute joke...I'm in the wrong business f they are getting anywhere near that kinda loot for packing stuff

I made that mistake when I needed to ship a guitar. I know I wasn't going to trust myself on packing it. Luckily, the buyer wanted the guitar really bad and paid all the extra in shipping.

And I also use to pack all my own packages and pay at UPS Store to ship, figuring it was the same as UPS. NOT! Now that I pack, weigh, and print my own labels with my own UPS account - I think it's about half what it was at the UPS Store.

Needless to say now, the UPS Store has been closed for over a year now.

UPS stores are franchises. People pay them for the SERVICE they provide.
I buddy of mine owns 2 UPS stores here in California and each store pulls in almost $1M gross each year.

2 words: FedEx Office

MUCH cheaper.

I shipped back a VERY heavy rack mount HP signal generator, a rack mount HP counter/timer, and a boxed EPROM programmer. They packed it in the biggest box they had which was almost 3x3' in size.

75lbs - $109 + change for packing AND shipping via FedEx Ground from California to Texas.

Box arrived in perfect shape and with no shipping damage to the contents.

I just turned down a deal for much needed dynamo showcase parts because of UPS shipping. Marquee box alone was $50 and the plexi and monitor bezel was $130. So, I still need those, if anybody has them and can ship them for a reasonable rate. :D

Yea, they vary in honesty too...

I had to ship a bunch of junk back when I got laid off (I used to work from home). The company gave me their shipping number to use to send stuff back. I wanted to ship everything as cheap as possible (within the parameters of UPS) because I harbor no ill will toward the company.

One local UPS store said I can only ship stuff second day with that sort of account number. Oooohhhhkay. Sounds odd, but whatever. Next day I hit another location and lo and behold that was a complete fabrication! Ground was perfectly fine!

Dunno what the company got billed for either one, but what the hell? Why can't these bozos at least be honest about the services? They are already ripping you for the ability to come into a store - why not leave it at that?

I am fortunate enough to be a few miles from the actual UPS center at our airport. A lot cheaper by all means. I cannot believe they are selling an empty new box for over $70.00/

You don't understand. There's air in that box that they are throwing in for free! And it's quality UPS air, not just crappy every day air.

The only reason that they can do that, is because having the ups store pack an item is the only defence to the normal response of "improperly packed" if the damage the item.

But I have never heard of a $70 box..

Probably to make up for all those megatouches they break in shipping.

Fuck the UPS store!

They're not even actually UPS they're Mailboxes Etc.. So if you an issues with an item you shipped THROUGH them or that was damaged, even if they packed it, it's not considered by UPS as UPS' fault.
You have to process a claim through the "UPS store" it's self and they process it through MBE.
They make it so difficult to get reimbursed that (I'm sure) most people just give up.

Not only that; if you do pursue the claim that will almost always deny it on some (usually BS) technicality and then you must keep calling and keep pushing the issue to get reimbursed.

My brother and I have had tons of musical equipment shipped and UPS is BY FAR AND AWAY the absolute WORST at handling packages. We've had over 30 claims with UPS over equipment that was damaged by them in 5 years. Opposed to 1 through Fed Ex...

UPS alone is a pain to deal with but "The UPS store" is straight up fucking with you!

I will rarely use UPS and that's when I have no choice but I will NEVER use the UPS store!!!

I know they are old mailboxes etc, but under the franchise agreement by UPS and item packed by UPS stores is automatically correctly packed and UPS covers the damage.

I found this out shipping Megatouches first hand, after they broke one that was packed in factory packing and UPS claimed it was improperly packed and would not pay the claim. But their adjuster said if it was packed by a UPS store it would have been covered regardless of how they packed it.

Since then if the buyer will not pay for it to go LTL or freight and will only pay for UPS I have always had the UPS store pack them. (still only about 1 out of 7 get there in one piece) but they never have denied the claim. They still initially claim improperly packed. But when you tell them the UPS store packed it, they ask for a fax of the reciept and then approve the claim and issue a check. Sometimes returning the damaged machine, and others keeping it. But they have always paid the claim, once the UPS store stated store packed on the reciept. (even though they just pack them in penuts, not nearly as well as one would pack something of that weight.)

And trust me after all the Megatouch machines them and fedex have broken, the claim from something packed at a UPS store does not go through MBE, it is handled directly by UPS claims dept.

I prefer to ship them LTL or freight, but you know how alot of buyers are and insist on cheap shipping and taking the chance, others even insist on shipping via UPS so they do not have to be there to recieve it. (personally I would not want anything of mine sitting on the porch in the rain, but you know there are all kinds of people out there.)

Forgot to mention that I was refering to actual UPS stores, not to be confused with other UPS shipping places that have the UPS shipping, or UPS shipping center etc signs........

At a previous job where we designed medical equipment, we were working with HP (back in the days when they weren't just a computer company). Their medical division had a lot of interesting tests they had devised, and the most fascinating to me was the packaging test - to go to production with the packaging, the product had to survive being shipped back and forth across the US in the same box for some number of cycles.

Apparently UPS had the most aggressive handlers.

I offered a Lethal Enforcers board to someone for 50 shipped. In the end UPS store took over 30 of that in the cardboard box and packing materials alone. Seriously!? I thought I'd at least get 2/5 of asking price. By the time I got the charge it was already packaged and taped up with a label on it so there wasn't a lot I could do. First and last time I ever used the swindlers...
