I got a Squawk & Talk board for my UDOT and I'm having a some trouble getting it to work in the game. The board was from a Bally NFL Football, but I burned the EDOT roms for it (U3, U4, U5). I hooked up everything per this guide:
http://www.ionpool.net/arcade/mcr/dot/index.htm
but it does not work in the game.

My power board is working fine, so I have a switcher powering the S&T board with +5 & -5. I ran the lines from the SSIO board to the S&T board per the schematic and jumpered pins 8 & 9 on the SSIO to put it in EDOT mode. Hooked up the S&T output to the SSIO board and I get speech when I press the test button on the S&T board. It goes through all the different speech lines and plays a sound effect at the end.

However, in the game (test mode or otherwise), the speech does not work. I just get a small popping noise when it tries to play any speech. I did not get the popping when I didn't have the S&T installed.

I read up on JeffC's thread, but I didn't see anything that I was doing wrong: http://forums.arcade-museum.com/showthread.php?t=63259

Anyone have any ideas?

Since I'm not positive that my Squawk & Talk board is 100% functional, I'd like to test it in a working EDOT. Is there anyone local to Philadelphia that would be willing to help?

Sorry to respond OT, but wow - that can't be common!

One thing to keep in mind, there are two versions of the board that are not interchangeable. They are very easy to tell apart. The pinball versions have a big "pronged" heat sink on the lower right corner of the board, and are much more common. I believe these don't have the same pin-outs as the EDOT version, which does not have that big metal heat-sink on the board.

I need to fix a bunch of my image links in those old threads of mine. They were broken when Yahoo bought and closed down geocities hosting.

Anyway, here is my EDOT board:

The needed resistor and cap between the sound out from S&T and the sound-on points on the SSIO:

The sound jump-on points on the DOT SSIO board:

The game interface jumping on points on the SSIO board (I've since bent the pins correctly and made a molex connector) - The big green caps on the SSIO board were missing from mine, and are needed for speech.

Things to do/check:
** Jump pins 8 & 9 on J5 on the SSIO board to put the game in Speech mode.

** Connector J1 on the Squawk and Talk board: From S&T-J1 to SSIO-J5: Pin1(blue) to Pin10 / Pin2(orange) to Pin11 / Pin3(yellow) to Pin12 / Pin4(white) to Pin13 / Pin8(grey) to Pin14. On the S&T board, J1, Pin5(red) goes to +5v on the switching PS. Pin6(green) goes to ground. Pin9(brown) goes to -5v on the PS. Pin14(green) goes to ground.

** Connector J2 on the Squawk and Talk board: Pin4(white) goes to a 5k ohm pot for volume. Pin5(yellow) goes to the pot. Pin9(purple) goes to the end of a 13K 1/4w resistor, which goes to a 1.0UF 50V 20% CER RADIAL capacitor. The two black wires connected to the other end of the capacitor go to the two test clips to the right. Pin10(green) goes to to ground.

** Make sure your S&T board is getting +5 at the test points.

** Lastly - To check your S&T board, just wire up the power and connect your sound out to any stereo amp in and hit the test button. You should hear all of Sark's sayings in a row.

Rich H. (don1400 on here) was extremely helpful to me in getting this working. I can't count the number of troubleshooting emails he sent.

Good luck!

Thanks JeffC. I do have the correct S&T board and I have it wired up just like you do, except I have pins 4 & 5 on J2 jumpered instead of on a pot. Hitting the test button does cycle through all the phrases and I can hear them loud and clear through the speakers.

The only thing that seems to be different is I have diodes where you have caps next to J5 on the SSIO. What values should the caps be?

Good news if you can hear it. So your board and ROMS all work.

I just checked the book; the caps at 104-111 should be .1 MF 50V. They call for axial which obviously I didn't use. I think I used the closest I could find at Radio Shack. CP35 is in that same row and calls for a .01MF 50V.

Good thread. Thanks for updating the pics Jeff. When Rich finally gets those CPOs and plastics going, I'm going to get to working on this again and get an S&T board.

Damn I'd love to add this to my Upright, but I must admit I am not very electronically inclined and this looks intimidating! :)

So, does anyone sell a kit or can help me get everything together to do this? I'd prob. have to get my repair guy over to install it, though, unless there's someone here from Florida that would be willing to help me out.

Now that I have my deflect button working, this is the next logical step- squawk and talk would be bad ass!

Jeff, do you only get the phrases I wrote about in the other thread or all of the phrases from when you push the test on S&T?

Hey Andre, Finally a chance to repay you for that "deflection board - bad pot" video that helped me a while back.

Here's the full sound from the test S&T test button; I think he says every possible phrase: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yexiYmxgLRI

Crap...I don't really remember hearing those when I played an EDOT decades ago, but after that little morsel...I've gotta do it!

Glad you got this working.. was it the caps that were the issue?
But when you press that, you can hear a whole string of talking.. like 'master control requests you on the game grid' or whatever it is... but in actual gameplay I only get maybe 3 things (listed them in that other thread).. like 'bring in the logic probe' and 'i don't know how you survived'.. sucks because there is so much more there... but not even sure the Edot uses them all?

Do you think a ROM could be hacked to make the game use all the phrases?

My EDOT only uses "I don't know how you survived, slave!", "You'll regret this!", "Bring in the logic probe.", "Greetings! Master Control Program has chosen you to serve on the game grid.", Sark's laugh: MUUAAHAHAH!, HAHAHAAA!, HAAAHHAHHA!, "Nice.", "We'll get you! It's only a matter of time!", and "Had enough?".

But aren't there more? It's been a while since I used the test menu.

Honestly I still don't know what my issue was. It was something with the orignal S&T board, because I ended up getting another one and had everything working in 10 minutes. All of my wiring...the cap/resitor...all of that was correct all along.

Things from the test menu that I don't recall in game-play:

"Sark!!"
"No...bit brain"
"Take Him"
"Finish the Game"
"Thank you Master Control"

I replaced the diodes with the same caps JeffC used, but nothing changed. I still get a small pop when trying to play voices from the test menu or in the game. Speech still works when I hit the test button.

I get a quick flash when power is applied, then 4 flashes.

What is a pia?

I just read further down that you do hear talking so the 5200 must be good.. You should get 5 flashes.. it means a pia chip is more than likely dead... try re-seating them before replacing.
