I have a Upright Discs of Tron I purchased non-working. I was able to get it to come up by swapping out the MCR power supply. Now it can play, but has no sound or spinner control. I ran the test function, and it showed no errors. During the input test, the spinner would not show up. The spinner did show up when you pulled up on it or pushed down on it but not on any rotational movement. The sound test did not produce any audio results. As part of troubleshooting, I put the DOT board stack into my Tron and it did the same thing. No sound or spinner movement. So I am guesing this is not a cabinet issue unless the Tron and DOT are not that easily interchangable. I did change out the old original ribbon cables to the new computer type. It still does the same thing - no audio or spinner. I had originally thought it was a connection issue since I had a similiar issue with my Tron (Tron could not move right & partial spinner control) I found two loose wire connectors. But since it follows the boardset, I am guessing it is something else.

I have included pics of the boardset in the Upright Discs of Tron. Hopefully someone has seen this issue before or knows what I need to check or causes this.

One of the 3 boards in the MCR stack is a sound/IO board. It has its own processor and handles the audio as well as the control input. Given that you are seeing problems in both of these areas, you probably have an issue with that board. (Your audio amp, which is a small separate board, could be toast as well though..)

You have checked your ribbon connectors, which is usually the culprit with these things. If you are 100% sure that you have your ribbon connectors properly set up, you should start testing voltages and components on the sound board. One thing you can do to start is clip some multimeter leads across any of the electrolytic capacitors on the corners of the sound board and see what type of +5V logic voltage you are seeing there. You could always try swapping out the 6502 processor--you might get lucky there.

I am guessing it is not the small audio amp, since it did the same thing in the Tron machine. Can I swap the sound/io board with a Spy Hunter sound /io board? I guess I need to swap out any applicable roms. I do not think it is the ribbon cables since it did the same thing before I changed them.

Thank you for the fast response

Have you verified +12v to both the pcb and spinner? Lack of +12 would cause the issues your having, as would bad interconnects between the ssio and the cpu.

CDJump,
I did not check 12V at the spinner, I did check at the board though. I will check at the spinner next. For "bad interconnects between the ssio and cpu" do you mean the ribbon cables?

Thanks

Try replacing the Z80B on the middle board. I recently worked on an MCR (Spy Hunter) that the controls registered in Input test, but not in game play. Replacing the the Z80B fixed it...

Thank you for everyones input. I replaced the top board with a spare non working Spy Hunter (just shows up with k's and r's on the screen). I moved the roms over and installed it - and yes that did it. Now I have sound and spinner control! I appreciate all the help.

What did you do with the NON working board.

Aloha.
