upper cabinet lighting issue {solved}

I picked up this built cabinet and it did not have a light bulb up in the uper cabinet where the game logo goes. I bought a bulb that fits correctly, no go. Got a new spark starter, no go. Got another bulb, no. Followed the wires all the way down to what I guess is some sort of power supply (looks like an electro magnet) and it was connected to that.

So I really do not know how to use a DMM, but I am guessing I should not try and see if the power is live going into the transformer. Any suggestions?

I do have another ballast I can test.. So I guess I can try that. It is for a beer sign I am repairing.

You need to learn how to use a DMM so you can check to see if you are getting voltage to the light fixture or not...

Did some googling. Tested the DMM on a house socket, then went down and checked the molex and saw 120V. Put the DMM probes into the flourescent bulb sockets and got nothing. So guessing it must be the black transformer / ballast (not sure which one it is).

modessitt, might you be a Derailers fan? Good friends with Sweet Basil McJagger. He is a moderator on my forum.

This thread makes me laugh reading it. I have learned a bunch since my first few posts here. It is all because of you guys (awwwwwwwww). Thanks.

Got both of my marquees lit up finally. It was the ballast on Escape from the planet of the robot monsters and I went ahead and replaced the ballast and starter on baby pacman and she is looking fine. Home depot had two of the magnetic ballasts tucked behind the fancy new style. Not as cheap as the Lowes deals you guys were talking about, but I wanted to keep it as close to original and not put a walmart fixture in them.
