Updating the Pac 4-in-1 hack

This would really rock. I would love to be able to update my mspac to a 4n1 with this.

I also tried it and noticed the same fruit bug after the game. When does the HSS table come back on the screen, does it cycle on during attract mode?

I am regretting ever making the comment about 6pac, I was just trying to be nice and not cause so much controversy.

Has anyone tries the HSS yet? Feedback?

What controversy? Mark hasn't said anything at all... and it seems only Wunder thinks he'll have a problem with it. I'm in the camp that I don't think he'd give a shit.

No Kits please.

Please keep this hack/mod in the public domain and not part of a kit or multigame. If the makers of the kits want to integrate your mod then fine but please keep it independent and available to all for free. The more tech savvy hobbyist will always prefer to do his own mod rather than buying some plug in kit. Doing it yourself is half the fun and what this hobby is built on. Thank you for your efforts!

Here ya go. Got a little farther, but the strawberry is still kinda messed up.

Pac-Man with arrow keys hurts my hand, I am done now.

Thanks for the feedback, this has been fixed and re-uploaded. Any other feedback is welcome.

Nice work. The attract mode in free play or with credits added is awesome. I do like the idea of a "top 5", nice touch, although I would prefer something more simple, like just the standard 3 initials instead of a full name. The extra zero's in fron of all the scores makes it look a little busy also IMO. I'm sure other players would also just like a simple HSS, without a "top 5" and/or initials. I wonder if customization to the player's preferred settings could possibly come to light?

Another suggestion would be to use the start buttons to enter & delete initials rather than up/down.

That's great feedback... I will consider the changes. Any seconds on these comments?

Start button to enter initials would not work on player 2 side of cocktail tables.

Isnt it joy up to select??

It is, and it works well that way. I was referring to welove80s idea, shown below.

I fixed some bugs and made a couple of enhancements (thanks to all that commented) and have about 3 more to fix. I uploaded a new version, you can get it at http://www.souzaonline.com/temp/mame_pac_hss.zip

I will try and fix the remaining issues by this weekend and post steps to anyone that volunteered to beta test on real hardware (if you want to help test and have not sent me an email please do) and hopefully post the new version for everyone to use next week.

I second these comments. I like the idea of initials only. It seems a little out of place to enter a full name. It seems a little weird using "up" to select the letter, though I understand why you can't use 1p start (this seams like the most logical choice).

Great work, BTW. What is the process of getting this to work on a PCB? I haven't installed a 4-in-1 before. Is it difficult?

Can't wait to have this work for my Ms. Pac.

Up is how you select the letter on the Super ABC kit. It shows an alphabet going across the screen and you move left and right and hit up to select the letter that the cursor is under. It isn't perfect, but it works quite well since you only have a joystick to work with for all players on a cocktail table.

Now that I give it a bit of thought, that makes more sense. 1p start isn't that intuitive.

Does the Super ABC record full name or just initials?

It only does initials. It also mixes the High scores from the various games which is sort of odd, but someone said it color codes the scores to match the source game. I have not verified that yet. But if true, it doesn't color the highest score right.

I can't find a picture of the high score entry screen online. I will have to try and get a picture of it as well as test out this version.

Wow, I am glad I posted this for people to try out. I would have never thought in a million years the number of characters for the name would be an issue. If anything I would think if I ONLY put initials people would complain. I guess my thinking was if people only wanted to enter initials they could select done after 3 characters. Any chance we could take it to a vote (configurable is not an option for the first pass at this).

I think the main reason people would opt for initials is because that is more authentic. Some games did full names, but most did not. Plus, if you do a name, the user has to navigate to an "End" character instead of just being done after the third initial. So while both are compatible, names are cumbersome and make initials more cumbersome too. If you had more than a Joystick, it wouldn't matter because the buttons would help.
