I am going to update the 4-in-1 hack located at http://arcade.souzaonline.com
I am adding freeplay/coin up with attract and a high score save

If anyone wants to play around with the HSS you can get it from here (pac only for now)

Once i freeze the code for this I will port it to ms Pac

You can download it from here
http://www.souzaonline.com/temp/mame_pac_hss.zip

This is a self contained shrunken version of mame.
Just uncompress and run the following
Pacman with HSS: run_pacman_hss.bat
Pacman Original: run_pacman_orig.bat

Issues to fix
1. FREEPLAY/HSS: we need to be able to start or insert coins when attract (HSS screen)

Also, this could very easily be retro fitted into Spaeth's 6-pac. It is a great kit and I know a lot of people use it. I would be happy to make the rom upgrade with Mark's permission and someone lending me a kit for a couple of weeks.

Hmmm... no interest. I did not get any comments or feedback
I guess I can put this one on the shelf.

Is it that people don't own soldering irons and eprom burners anymore or does Pac-man not have a big following anymore? Any other ideas that people may be more interested in?

If you added HSS to Mark's six pac, people would probably come out of the woodwork. There are plenty of threads on here about people wanting HSS on the multi-pac kits and being forced to to the 96-in-1 or the SuperABC kit. Having HSS on Mark's would be a great addition.

Mark made the kit open source so you can modify it for sure.

Completely doable, out of respect for Mark I would not do this without his ok
If there is interest I will add it. The problem is for it to work people would need to drop in an nvram and solder a couple of wires. I don't think many people in the hobby are up for this anymore. Unless Mark wants to update his design to incorporate an nvram or a serial eeprom.

He kicked the idea of updating it around on one of the six-pac threads. I know he ran out of the edge connectors he was using and that killed the availability of the kit. You can always email Mark to see what he says. Maybe he found a supply of the edge connectors since.

Edit: Soldering and ROM burning is actually done by a bunch of folks here. So I don't think that would stop people from doing it.

Are you telling us that basically you wont do an update at all unless you either get interest in it and/or make it compatible with the 6-Pac? Or are you simply saying that you are making an update but are seeking interest to make it work with the 6-Pac? I'm confused

I for one would love to see this update with the 4-in-1, even if you cant make it work with another kit like the 6-Pac, it would still be nice to have. But if you are looking for Mark's blessing, I think you might look elsewhere, some words were said many months ago on these forums and I havent seen him on here since.

Mark is on here nearly every day. He now posts under the name 'Hudsonarcade'. As for his blessing... well, I doubt that will happen but it is worth a try.

What I was saying was I will not do either if there is not interest. The 4-in-1 is almost done but I wanted some feedback from people before releasing it. Updating the 6pac was just a thought since it would be easy enough. I have a great deal of respect for Mark and would not do anything related to his kit without his permission.

If people are interested in this for the 4-in-1 test it out with the link on the top of the thread and give me some feedback

Edit: The game in the link also has the free play in attract. Some feedback on that would be nice too

If you leave his gmail address on the title screen so as to not remove his credit, I'm pretty sure you will get his blessing. He indicated that removing him from the title screen would be pretty douchetastic or something that effect. ;)

I would love to see freeplay attract and HSS on the 4-1 mod! I have done several boards with the 4-1 and love it. It sure beats having to open the coin door and flip switches.
The HSS would be a huge plus for me. I have plenty of NV ram in stock.

I was the asker, the word he used was "tacky".

I don't believe in a million years that Mark is going to give you permission to do this on the backside of his work. He probably won't tell you that here, expect a big fat ignore on this question - that will be his veto. IMO.

..

If I get good feedback it will happen for the 4-in-1. If Mark wants it for the 6pac it is up to him. I have no vested interest in it but think it would be neat.

I stand corrected on the word although douchetastic is sort of a synonym for tacky in my mind. :)

Anyway.... I'm not sure where you guys are coming from with this... It is one thing if he was going to take Mark's work, modify it, and sell it. The OP makes his mods available for free right? If he is going to come up with a mod for Mark's kit and make it freely available with Mark still getting the credit he is due, then I don't see any problem here. Obviously, modifying the kit means that Mark is in no way responsible once a mod was attempted.

What do you guys think open source is? Why do you think Mark said it was open source and posted it if he didn't want anyone to do anything with it? Just shoot Mark an email to his gmail account to see if he is cool with it if you want to give him a heads up.

I have a six pac and would consider modifying it. It is mine after all. :)

There's no way Mark is going to give Souza (of all people) permission. Just have a hunch given the history there.
