I haven't toyed with my MAME machine in a while, so I just want to verify something. I'm running Hyperspin and considering upgrading my rom sets. Would I just need to download the latest eversion of mame.exe and the matching rom set, and just replace both in the appropriate directory where I currently have them? I believe that's the case, but wanted to verify if there are other steps to take (I seem to recall something about renaming the mame.exe file as well).

basically, yes. Depending on how old your build is you might want to just clean out your mame install, delete common files in the directory and retain your mame.ini if you've changed any settings.

One other thing you may need to check is your MAME.ini file.

Some parameter names could be obsolete or renamed since your current build.

I'd just do a diff between your file and the default one with the new mame version that you download and I'd move all your changes into the new one so that whatever new parameters were added or renamed etc, will be the current version.
