I received a private message asking the following:
VAPS used to have about 3,000 members at an early peak, and then dropped down to 900 when people were dropped for inactivity. We did a major update to VAPS some time back and since then the numbers started growing again.
The game detail pages had '900' hard coded into them.
More recently, we moved VAPS from VAPS.org onto arcade-museum.com. When we did that, we hard coded 5000 into a members line on the VAPS home page, which was accurate for the time. Note that up to the minute (and thus more accurate) information was also available on the VAPS stats page.
VAPS has grown well over the last year, and is up to 6,299 members as of today.
Today I updated the game detail page to show the current # of members. However, instead of quoting the number of all VAPS members, I'm only quoting the number of VAPS member that have actually added owned and wanted items to their profile (3,612 instead of 6,299).
So for the example quoted in the PM, it now reads, "There are 30 known instances of Arch Rivals owned by one of our 3,612 members who participate in our machine census project."
I then updated the VAPS home page to show both total members and census participating members so it didn't look like there was a large unexplained discrepency between the two numbers.
On the VAPS stats page, a few more fields have been added, answering questions like "How many members have added items to their want list?" and "How many members have added items to their want list but have not listed any owned items?"
In the near future, I'm going to add a few things to VAPS dealing with dates and for sale/wanted lists so people can have an idea how stale or not such listings are.
