Unofficial Pi Position Q&A & Support Thread

I finally understand why the video on the Pi Position is not as crisp/sharp as my original Pole Position PCB.

The problem is the Raspberry only outputs HDMI digital video or 15Khz composite video (no RGB), so there's no easy / cheap solution to get pure 15Khz RGB signals out of the Pi to feed the arcade CRT.

Composite video will not looks crisp/sharp. Has anyone else noticed that the video is not as sharp? Has anyone found a way to output RGB using the Pi Position?
Yes, it looks muddy and fuzzy on my CRT. I was amazed at how much better it looks with the original PCBs when I recently got them rebuilt.

Hey guys, is anyone running their Pi Position with just a wall adapter plugged into the raspberry pi instead of the AR2's powering it? I get a red LED on the microcontroller but nothing else. Thank you

yes you can do that but remember you need the ar2 for your audio unless you plan to use an amp

Thanks for the reply! I've rebuilt my AR2's but am having problems. I also rebuilt my G07 and am getting neck glow but I'd like to see a picture on the screen before I go any further. Do you have a picture of how the edge connector should be connected to the Pi Position? Thanks again

Repinned the edge connectors and tried again. I'm getting lights on the pi itself, the pi position board and the monitor powers up but no video whatsoever.

I've adjusted the b+ on the G07 and when I turn up the brightness it's obvious the tube is working and all other adjustment pots adjust the size of the border around the bright screen. Please help!

dumb question but do you have an sd card installed?

Yes sir, is there a specific format I should try formatting it to and the rewrite it? I used the 2021 files from the YouTube video link and also am using a new RP 3b+… not sure what to try
the format is not a choice its a disk image . for example if you are just dragging and dropping the file to the sd card it won't work

in that link there is a program called win32 disk imager. you need that to image the disk. this file is an image of an sd card that is set up to work. you need to clone that card with win32 disk imager

Thanks for the reply! I followed your instructions in the video exactly and used win32 disk imager to write the files to a 32GB SanDisc SD card
ok there is not much to this beside gert 565 mode #2. in other words if your pi is working its pretty much the gpio directly connected to a resistor dac to generate an image. in other words a healthy pi and sd card is all that is needed to produce an image. have you verified 5v at the capacitor next to the gpio header? do you have more than 5v?

Give me ten minutes and I'll hook everything back up and check the 5V. Where is a ground I can use on the board?

just test across that cap. one side is ground. if the meter says 5v or -5v either way is an accurate reading

random thing i found on line.^^ maybe this will help?
Okay so I have tried writing the image to four different SD cards, I've tried formatting them and then writing them as well and still no luck.

I've been reading on raspberry pie forums that the pi 3b+ can be picky when it comes to SD cards, can you please give me brand and model number of an SD card you've used that has worked with this thing?

The place I bought my pi from is also sending me a free replacement so will try that if your SD card recommendations don't help.

i have never found an sd card that didn't work for me. maybe i have been lucky. but on the other hand no one has told me their card has not worked either. so far 500 pipositions have been sold and the first 200ish used the 16gb sd card that microcenter sells for $4. out of the remaining 300 ish an sd card issue has not been reported yet. it doesn't matter what format you use because it will just be overwritten by the image anyways. dumb question but how long does it take win32 disk imager to make the card? it should take about 15 minutes

That is honestly a relief to hear because I'm tired of buying SD cards lol I'm assuming the person I bought the pi off of just bought a big lot of untested ones because it only took one message to get him to send a replacement.

It took about 16:30 every time I wrote it to a card, and when I check the files on the card they are all there so I guarantee it is an issue with the pi itself.

Thanks for all the help Jason, I'll post when I get the replacement in

Sorry I forgot to add this to my first reply but the 16GB card does not work with the new update! Apparently a 16GB card is like 14GB so all the files do not fit…might want to let arcadeshop know.
