Universal Zero Hour Restoration/Rebuild

my seawolf has some flake on the bottom and it is frustrating, deciding on how to address it still. got a pic of the flaking? clear will lock it in, but then you might as well touchup at that point as well.

The issue with touch-up on Zero Hour is that there is a pattern even in the white (faint but there). I don't know. I might still touch it up.

Right now, if I am not careful, every time I move the game or slide it around, a tiny piece of laminate flakes off. Gotta stop that.

I will post pics soon.

Here are the flaking pics. This is one of the worst sections.

The varnish I am using is OK. It is better than nothing and is not visible for the most part.

The issue is that there is a "height difference" between the laminate and the bare wood. This difference makes it easy for things to "catch" on the lip created by this difference. What I really need is something viscous enough to fill this difference and make it level. What I have might work, but is going to require a lot of coats.

P.S. You can also see the faint pattern in the white that touch up can't fake.

Nice. That is a really cool subtle pattern. A light quality glazing putty would work. Unlike bondo you could feather it in nice.

Half Time.

Only thing im worried about is that laminated is so chewed up youre going to be feathering at some many choppy angles it might be hard to pull off.

Got it. I was hoping it would be clear (sounds like it is blue). Is there such a thing?

fiberglass resin i guess, but that is not really what it is for.
Yeah. I was thinking of looking into something like this.

A fine line between protecting and f-ing up.

Maybe I will just put a "don't touch" sign on the side :)

lock down the fraying some how or cut it flush across so its not so irritating to the eye. OR shove it into a row and forget about it lol

Fiberglass resin is nice to work with but I think it would be too thick for that delicate, small difference in height. It's like working with honey. I use it with great results on chipped particleboard edges but it requires sanding - something you're trying to avoid here.

Maybe polycrylic? It's thin so it should travel underneath any lifting laminate. It dries clear. I've applied it via syringe to "re-glue" delaminating CPOs before with good effect.

Thanks for sharing the URL, I was able to pull the pictures to recreate the CPO and instruction card!!!!
Great. Thanks for posting in the thread.

For folks reading this, we basically have the marquee, lower marquee, bezel, CPO, and instruction card repo'd now.

I can scan the sideart and kick plate as well (or at least try).

That being said, I am not an artist or distributor of art. @Solodus and @rjones1 will take care of this.

The other day I put my Devil Zone next to the Zero Hour. A little mood music and some quiet time later and I got what you see in the pic.

Another way to put this is that I visited @pat9000 - Let's just say his stash is INCREDIBLE. @DLP you need to find a reason to visit him (or any other Jersey person reading this). Imagine the warehouse where the ark was in Indiana Jones times 10.

Anyway, the good news is that I have some other pieces I need (transformer, power supply; monitor, monitor support hardware). The bad news is that the bezel has a Mega Zone instruction card cut out and inserted. Also this cab has Mega Zone side art on it (that is peeling part of the original off).

Right now my plan actually is to convert this to a Galaxy Wars (yes another project and the cab is not quite right; GW had red side art). However, I have the bezel for Galaxy Wars and I am in no rush.

This does not have a back door either. Yes, @KeeperUSA I know I need to get to these. The weather is finally nice enough to do this and now I have to build two sets (this new game does not have back doors either).

I am going to keep the bezel and just use it for my Zero Hour. It is original (and in really good shape minus the instruction card) and I hate to trash it. Now it has some patina and a "story" behind it. Lemons out of lemonade.

As an artwork update @rjones1 has the bezel, marquee, and lower marquee 99% done to be printed. Reach out to him if you want more info.

I'll post pics of them when I get them but I don't want to get between him and his business. He is really great to work with BTW.

Oh, I've known him for 25 years (unfortunately). Lol just kidding. He's definitely a good friend. One of my company's offices is right near his place, so I see him often.

Yes, I would very grateful for details on how you rebuild the back doors. I have to build a set for myself.

@KeeperUSA - I cut a bunch of wood for the back doors this past weekend. I have to make a complete back for the Zero Hour and an upper and lower for the new cabinet I got.

Usually, I would just post some pics of the progression. What details do you need?

Awesome job! What type of wood did you use? I just need a few pointers to get me started - my woodworking skills aren't good.

The middle section appears the most difficult to make.
