Universal Zero Hour Restoration/Rebuild

Ok. Now I have the cabinet!

Not in terrible shape. Needs a good cleaning first.

I will be doing that along with securing the base and adding good leg levelers next.

After that, I will be cleaning up the coin doors and the speaker cloth.

More pics and progress to come.

Shout out to @JollyRodger for the shipping help from MD.

Ok. I have made decent progress.

First I cleaned up the bottom of the cabinet. That included cleaning and painting the base, removing and repainting the metal supports, and adding leg levelers. I also pulled the casters and will be replacing the wheels on them soon. Here are some before and after pics.

Next I pulled the lower coin door and cleaned that up.

The last final pic shows my custom keychain and a quarter from the year the game came out (I have these on every game I have).

I also painted the top of the cabinet a nice new white and repainted the vent as well.
Also fixed any of the cabinet that was peeling away.

Added light fixtures and cleaned up the control panel latches.

The light fixtures are actually from a Cosmic Avenger so they are authentic to Universal cabinets.

Finally, the whole thing was put back together with the control panel and marquee I had.

The next thing is to put the coin door back in. I am cleaning and striping it. Then I am going to paint it fresh. I will post more pics.

After that, I have to rebuild the back doors. This requires 4 separate panels. Two are removable and two are not. Fortunately, I have other Universal cabs to copy. I did an update back door recently for my Devil Zone. I just need good weather so I can go into my driveway to cut wood.

One thing that will make a really big difference is Tmolding.

If you are interested, go on over there and speak up please!

Cleaned up the coin door.

I sandblasted it. I have used citrus strip on more than 20 coin doors. This was the first one I sandblasted. I am never going back to citrus strip if I can help it.

Again, thanks to @DLP for the door. It cleaned up real nice.

(BTW the coin on it is my little touch. On all my games I have a magnet coin case with a quarter from the year the game came out)

Current state. See pics.

At this point, I have pretty much put everything back that I have. Now for the harder parts.

Here are the next steps:

1. Build a completely new back door system. Everything was missing. This is a four-part set. Two parts are fixed. Two are removable. Again, I built a new upper removable section for my Devil Zone. This is not going to be too hard. The trickiest part will be the handhold in the middle fixed section and the circular cutout on the bottom of these games where the power cord enters. All my issues here will have to do with my lack of a real woodworking area/setup (aka need good driveway weather).

2. Figure out T-molding. A separate thread going on for this. Need 27/32" black T-molding.

3. Need power supply AND transformer. @TSB - I assume at this point your power supply stuff is staying with you. Right now I am actually most interested in the transformer setup. I might be forced to go to Facebook groups....

4. Artwork - I have scans of the two bezels. I want to work with @Solodus from RetroCity Arcade on this. The key point will be to figure out if I want the lower bezel printed on glass. Ideally, it would be. I don't know if he can handle that. I love TOG quality but I am not sure I can do the wait associated with full custom. @advans13 - what is your thread turning up regarding good custom printing options?

5. Speaker - just need to get a simple speaker. I need to look at what my other Universal games have. Easiest next step.

Anyway, that is good for now. There is a whole discussion to be had on the monitor, shroud setup, monitor support, PCB, wiring, etc.

If you have parts PM me!

How are you progressing with the doors? I am missing all the door parts for my Cosmic Avenger cabinet.

Responded to your PM but I will reply here as well.

I have not started making the new back yet. It is missing four sections.

The bottom and middle sections are fixed in place. The bottom has a hole in the middle for a vent and a large circle cut out on the left-hand side for the power cord. The middle section has a handhold in the center.

The other two sections are removable. The bottom one has a lock. The upper one does not but has metal brackets that rotate to hold it in place - https://forums.arcade-museum.com/threads/what-are-these-back-door-latches-called.498827/

This post is EXACTLY why I post on KLOV. Now I am motivated to get this done. I might even get to it this weekend. I will post pics, dimensions, etc.

While I am posting in this thread, another thing I am experimenting with is "varnish" to lightly apply to prevent the edges of the side art from flaking off.

I am going to try the satin version of this - https://shop.decoart.com/duraclear-varnishes

Sure it might be visible a the right angle but I need to stop the edges from flaking.
