I'm working to restore/repair a United Deluxe 6 Player Shuffle Alley that belonged to my wife's grandfather. This is my first project and I've made a lot of progress so far thanks to Marvin's EM repair guide. But I'm stumped by a problem with the game's scoring system. Specifically, the scoring step-up units do not reset at start up, and at the end of each frame, scores are not recorded.

I have cleaned all of the step up units in the game and they work smoothly. I've also cleaned the scoring disc and its wiper arms. The scoring motor works fine, and I've inspected all of the switches on the scoring motor cams and they also appear to be OK. I've been able to determine that the coils that control the switches for the scoring step-up units are not firing (there are three: players 1-3 1-9 step-up, players 4-6 1-9 step-up and all players 10-300 step-up). If I manually work the coils, then the scoring step-up units advance properly. I've checked the coils' resistance and it measures ~8 ohms for the 1-9 coils and ~14 ohms for the 10-300 coil.

I have the schematics and it seems the problem must be somewhere in the scoring disc/wiper assembly. But I'm struggling to map the schematic of this unit to reality. I can map the unit's contacts to the various switches/coils, but I don't see how to complete the circuit from the wiper arm back to anything since this unit does not have a center "common" contact point (I guess it should be back across the common/negative lead to the transformer?). How is this done? Could it be via the wiper/cam armature itself in some way? Perhaps this path is where my problem is? Any advice or suggestions on what to look at next will be greatly appreciated. If helpful or appropriate, I can post a copy of the schematic.

Thanks in advance.

Additional information

Experimenting further, I placed a jumper from the scoring motor frame to the common/negative line - and the scoring worked! This seems to confirm that the circuit from the wiper fingers to the negative line wasn't complete, but I don't like the idea of a hacked solution. I cannot see any indication that a wire or connector may have previously existed and is now missing. If anyone has photos or information regarding how this unit was originally configured, I would greatly appreciate it.

I will soon have a pro come in and get my game working again (see your other post) When that happens I can give you his phone # and maybe you can scope it out over the phone. Should be within 2 months. Don Jones
