"Analogue Interactive created this walnut-enclosed Neo Geo console. It's not just a one-off, either: they plan to start shipping them in May for the same price as the 1990 original, which heralded the era of consoles that were as powerful as real arcade games. At $649, though, it doesn't come cheap! [via Engadget]"

Actually, I was hoping someone re-touched the console system to make it look just like a 2600. I'd buy that for a dollar.

looks nice. something for the log cabin owner maybe? wonder if they make controllers too....

It isn't really an awful price when you consider the quality of what they are providing. Most consolized MVS systems will go for 400-600$ easy. And those are just the bare PCB with the mods to be able to hook in directly. He is offering a system enclosed in a very nice case, modded appropriately, with the matching controller.

And yes, the guy doing this has been looking for additional MVS-1C systems for a while :)

Why pay big money for a nice consolized MVS when you can own the original cabinet and some carts for the same price? I guess it's more a question of "Are you a gamer or are you a collector?"

To me, that's a waste of money just like the handheld MVS that came out that people were paying like $200-250. It's just roms programmed on an SD card. If you want it handheld or console, play an emulator on a PSP or console. I don't get it.

First off: It's the Neo Geo collector community so...you know...that should say everything.

Some nice guys in that community and cool games, don't get me wrong, but holy shit: a lot of high priced stuff (or over priced depending on the perspective) and very anal about very specific things. AES is just a whole different, well, "class" of video game collecting. Paying a couple hundred for the AES version of a forty dollar MVS cart is very much the norm.

With that said, I can see a consolized MVS costing that much considering, I am guessing that is, that it is a MVS-1 (90-ish bucks at most) PLUS a compact Super Gun (3-400-ish bucks to get pre-built by someone else). It likely comes down to what you want. A quality dedicated cabinet that is buttoned down and ready to go, without needing anything done by the buyer, is gonna cost about the same. So if you want that, but not deal with the footprint of a dedicated cab, I can see paying that cash for a sexy consolized version.

I don't understand the wood though. Why wood?

Because it looks cool. Work of art. Tech meets nature, etc. I like it. I don't have enough nostalgia for Neo-Geo (like so many, my allowance couldn't afford it), but I would be all over a wood NES. Should be easy -- it's already a block.
