Uneven T-molding Slots in Nintendo Particle Board Cab?

Is there a reason the slots are uneven? Uneven meaning one side is longer than the other so the T-molding sticks out slightly and uncovers slightly. I don't remember the old T-molding being uneven.

Is this common?

Jess, This problem is common, it is due to the fact that USA made Nintendo cabs are constructed from 5/8" partical board. The slot is offset because they used 5/8" "offset" T-molding. As far as I know no one has reproed it yet. Some have had luck with buying the regular 5/8" or 3/4" T-molding and trimming it flush. I'm not 100% on the 3/4" because I'm not sure of the thickness of the center strip. (it may be too thick) I have never done this myself, I usually steer clear of the USA cabs because most of the ones I've come across have the bottom blown out or have severe water damage. IMHO they don't hold up like the Plywood Jap cabs.

My DKJR is a plywood cab and the groove is offset too. Im thinking the cut the groove prior to putting on the laminate. Its the only reasoning I can see for it.
You have to install the T molding and then trim the overhang with a razorblade.

Thanks guys. The problem is, even if I trim the overhang, I still have the exposed side. Really sucks. I knew that particle board cabs are crappy and fragile, but I had no idea of the T-molding problem. Maybe there's a way to trim the slot and somehow keep the T-molding in place. I don't really want to have to glue it. We'll see when I get to that point I guess.

You really just need to bondo the offset groove and cut a new center groove after the bondo cures. They sell 5/8 inch centered t-molding. You'll just need:
-bondo
-a router
-a t-molding slot cutter bit.

My DK is a particle board cab that someone who owned it before me put 9/16 molding on it and painted the offset area black. Although I would prefer the right t-molding, it doesn't look that bad - Barry

I like this idea. More work, but probably a better result. Thanks Phet.

Im about to install the same molding on my DK Jr cab. But instead of painting that area black, I painted it white to match the molding. Can barely tell its there.
