Getting carpet laid down in a week or so in the basement and was thinking about putting down some undercarpet power cords in case I end up with a cocktail or something in the center of the room. I know there are approved cords/solutions for this that dont require digging up the floor....

Anyone have any experience with it? I'd love an undercarpet solution as opposed to an over carpet one...

Thanks

Wire drop from the ceiling, into a cluster of games...

This works best when you have a hollow support post in the middle of a room, specially in a basement. You can make it into an architectural column that looks good, and house several types of wiring in it.

Bad idea.

Having a power cord under a carpet is just asking for trouble. Moving a game over it or even foot traffic can eventually damage a cord to the point of it being a fire hazard, and you would never be able to see it until it was too late.

While there are approved and special cables for low voltage and signal level applications, I have never heard of anything designed for power distribution under a carpet.

I have to agree with this.

How about this? Over the carpet...

An idea for ya - since you don't have carpet laid down as of yet you could actually cut a channel out of the concrete, run some electrical conduit to a floor mounted outlet that is counter sunk (lid for it has carpet on it) so it can be hidden if not in use. Of course reseal the channel heh. The meeting rooms here at Intel are laid out like this. I think it's a wonderful idea for a gameroom.

Another idea is to get molding for the walls that would go around a ceiling, but instead of putting it right up against the ceiling, leave a gap. Tightly staple the wire to the top of the molding against the wall, checking to make sure that it's not visible from below. If done right, it just looks like extra decoration. Putting the molding around the floor instead is another option, leaving a gap underneath just large enough for the wire to snake under there, but it's the same concept. I see both methods used a lot in finished apartments and building hallways in NYC.

You could get raceway and run it along the base of the wall. I am not sure if you get them at a box store but I know you get them at an electrical supply house.

Wiremold is the brand I know Wiremold.com
