unbelievable.. create a business plan around arcade rentals and...

I like how it is half price if you get the "5 in 1" instead of the "40 in 1".

ummm.. if that is all that the business is based on, then how about the legality of it?? just like putting one on location and charging for it.

i should just email them asking if these are licensed games or if it is an unlicensed board.

I wrote them a note:

You suck. At lease tell people your renting them a crappy converted old cabinet that has a cheap chinese multi board in it that will not be anything like playing the game in the oriiginal cabinet..

I imagine your joysticks are also 8 way.. they suck for classic games.

Not to mention commercial gains from stolen software will land you in trouble.. Namco and Nintendo regularly sniff people out for this..

Good luck..you suck

Depending on your state, you don't have to get an operator's license if no coins or tokens are being inserted into the games.

As far as copyright infringement, it wouldn't matter if he was charging or giving it away for free - he's still in violation. So that has no bearing on the business model either.

I'v often thought about advertising rental for some games for convention booths, office or birthday parties, movie shoots, etc myself. I have dedicated and no multi's or MAME's in my collection, but I do build multi's all the time. I have less room than I have games anyway, so I might as well make some money off of it...

Yeah, that's good for the ol' money-making venture. Perhaps you could write a letter to the car dealerships in your area and ask them why they don't advertise that the value of the cars they sell will go down by 40% just by driving it off the lot?

Believe it or not, most people couldn't care less whether the cab is original, the board is original, or whatever. As long as the cab isn't fugly or smelling of cat urine, and the game looks, sounds, and plays like the original, they're happy.

I imagine your joysticks are also 8 way.. they suck for classic games.

Depends on the classic game. Hard to get through Scramble without an 8-way. I personally can't stand 8-ways for games like Pac-Man, Donkey Kong, or Frogger, but if I'm not dropping quarters in for every game, I can adjust enough to play the game okay.

He's not selling anything, so he probably won't hear from either. There are a few licensed Namco and Nintendo multis available, anyway. And it doesn't matter whether you get commercial gains or private pleasure from it, it's still illegal. I haven't seen you complaining about all the people selling these "cheap chinese" multis full of "stolen software" here. And that's strictly for commercial gain.

Good luck..you suck

All in all, a pretty useless note to send, and completely uncalled for, in my opinion. If you wanted to bitch about something, bitch about the classic cabs that were converted, not what or why they were converted for...

How do you know he does not have a real pcb for each game to cover his ass just in case. :D

Man, that's a bit harsh, no? All I see here is just a guy trying to make some cash out of what he loves doing. As far as the whole multigame thing goes, I am pretty sure regular non collectors would much rather rent a multigame that plays 48 games than an original that plays only one.

It's not like the guy is getting rich. He doesn't even know that when one takes a credit card, they "accept" it, not "except" it. Yeah, it's illegal, but he's strictly small time. Who knows, maybe this feeds his family since he lost his job?

I do find the '5 in 1' special to be humorous. The fact that he would go through the extra effort to turn all the games off, just to charge less is funny.

I wonder if he gets there and says "I decided to give you all a free upgrade to the 48 game system". That would go a long way in customer satisfaction. ;)

I've actually been thinking of doing this locally. But I was going to offer them a few games at a time.. You can't have a REAL party with only one cab, but offer DK, Asteroids, SI, Centipede, and Ms. Pac-man for $100-$200 night.

I just need to get all of those games so I can start my business.. :)

Meh... leave the guy alone... he's not pissing in anyones Frosted Flakes by doing what he's doing... Namco/Nintendo isn't losing any money (do you think anyone who actually uses this guys service is going to BUY an arcade machine?)...

The weakness here is that you're crabbing about someone who may be trying to keep their ship afloat during trying times. It's not like arcade rentals is your business and he is taking market share away with illegal practices.

I can understand the frustration - but does this really threaten your livelihood? Is this person in direct competition with you? If either answer is no - then you need to shit your anger brick and get over it. You are entitled to your opinion but it is not your job nor is it up to you to allow/disallow anyone from doing anything.
