Hello everyone. I am learning and I just wanted to get some guidance on this issue.

I have a dedicated Mortal Kombat 3 with the Ultimate Mortal Kombat 3 conversion. When I power it on, it makes four tones. Then during the diagnostic screen, it will conclude stating "sound section bad" with the U4 chip highlighted red. The game then will automatically launch. The sound works fine while playing, then cuts out after round one is finished.

Could this be a simple as replacing the U4 chip? If so, what are the different options for me to acquire one? Do people usually just buy scrap UMK3 boards and salvage the chip I need?

Let me know if you have any advice on this issue or anyway how to acquire the U4 chip. Thank you for your time.

no... it should be an EPROM. if the label is missing then natural light damaged the data of the rom. if the label is intact then you take the label off and UV erase the rom and program it with U4 code in the UMK3 MAME set. I'm going to just assume you don't have any of the things necessary for doing this. LOL

there's always @steph at www.hobbyroms.com that can program the U4 rom for you, for a price of course.

Yes! The label is missing.

in this case, should I remove it and send it to someone like Steph to reprogram the U4 ROM for me?

Is there someone who could just sell me a whole U4 EPROM that is already programmed so I don't have to send mine to them?

yes steph can just program you a working U4 rom. :)

Nice! I already messaged him yesterday, just waiting for his response. Thank you for your help mecha.

if you were local I would help you with this. it would be silly to ship a single rom back and forth.

Stephan responded and is sending me out a ROM tomorrow. Thank you for your guidance mecha.
