UMK3 Restore (MK1 conversion, I believe) joystick carriage bolts

Question: I'm rebuilding a UMK3, which was originally a MK1, I'm pretty sure. The guys did a hack job on the control panel; wired in led buttons, etc. The joysticks are fastened with carriage bolts running through the plexi (which is cracked around the bolts). All of the photos I'm seeing of MK CPs show no carriage bolts.

I'm guessing that the joysticks were fasted using either bolts welded to the sheet metal, or screwed into T-nuts.

What's the correct way to reassemble this?

And where's a good source for the lexan?

THANKS!

Original CP had Tnuts secured in the top of the wood under the metal panel. Machine screws secured the joysticks from below. Lexan can be had from user ctozzi here or on ebay.

On an MK1 (and all the MK as far as I know) the joysticks are attached to the wood panel into t-nuts sunk into the wood. See the pic on this auction for what the original panel looks like, I believe these are made by boostin4hp here on the forums, who also repros the metal piece and the CPO (not sure if he does the lexan or not).

T-nuts, #8 x 32 pitch if I recall correctly, just installed some on a custom panel I made a couple weeks ago.

Mine does not have a metal top. Is that normal for some?

All of them should have the metal panel, that's what the overlay is mounted to. Without the metal top the CPO wouldn't have anything to stick to around the joystick area, where the dust washer goes. The lexan, on the other hand, is optional and I've seen some with and some without it.

The overlays (there are 2, plus decals) are adhered directly to the wood. The dust washers are on top.

EDIT: I finally found a photo which depicts the control panel without the metal. Mine doesn't have the recesses for the dust washer. I'm thinking it was homemade.

Sounds home made, as is my new panel, it can be done and save some serious money if you have the time and tools, it was kinda a PITA to do and my metal panel is has no studs but it works.

Yep. I compared pics of actual MK3 CPs with mine, and the start buttons are in the wrong places. I'm going to need a complete control panel. This "cheap" MK3 is getting more expensive by the minute.

Boostin4hp hasn't responded to my PM, and hasn't posted since November, so I'm watching Ebay. If anyone knows of another source, I'm all ears!

Pretty sure boostin is the one selling repops of the control panel parts on ebay. I picked up the Killer Instinct Lexan from eBay and used it as a template for dimensions. wood, fittings and metal was picked up at Lowes for around 30 bux. Used machine bolts and tnuts to recreat the hinge bolts. Had some custom art printed and i now have this

Looks good. I already have a new CPO, so I need to match the holes. Found the CP wood for $49. Ordered a sheet of lexan. I'll cut and drill it. Now all I need is the sheet metal. A guy on Ebay makes them, and says he will have MK3 CPs in a couple of weeks. If that comes through, I'm good.

Thanks man, still have my original panel, just built this one for the emulator side of my mk2 machine.
I'm using wing nuts on the hinge panel, takes about two minutes to swap out one panel for the another
