Check the QFP (Quad Flat Pack) SMT (surface mount technology) chips for bent pins or pins not soldered properly - physical damage stuff...

Next is to check for gouged traces/scratched traces and broken off components.

After that is to check the program ROMs for bent pins. While you have them out of the sockets you need to read them and compare their checksums with the ones in the MAME dumps to see if you have a bad ROM.

After taking a look....
A component has been burned away. I believe it's c305. Surface mount

Looks like I'll be bringing this to our repair party

Sounds good. See you there!

Oh, and if you need soldering supplies, bring some cash... I have a vendor bringing 1lb rolls of solder for $10. :D

common failure that causes the black screen is bad U45 and U47 chips, they're graphic processors. fortunately those are socketed.. if you can read the numbers off them I've sourced them on ebay in the past, supposedly at a place selling them new.

the machine gun sound is interesting, you mean like when Stryker fires the machine gun? I have 2 boards I bought non-working and resurrected one of them. the other did something like you say, I popped known good U45 and U47 chips in and still had the black screen, but then I also got like the end round music from the Subway stage that played once on powerup. it was weird.

I'm leaning towards it being a blown surface mount cap or something like you've got, I didn't dig too far into it. I just know the graphic chips that came with it got hot as hell when you ran the board for 20 seconds. I'm honestly not going to dick with it though, as I have no extra romset for it anyway. got my moneys worth just fixing the other one TBH.

hope you get it going.

I haven't played Stryker in years, cause he sucks IMO. I can't remember the sound. I do play killer instinct. It sounded like one of those guys doing a fatality.

You wanna sell the parts board??

lol, my parts board has very little left, and I was unable to get that to boot. I had to scalp the sound chip off it to fix the other one anyway.

I have a long list of things I'd like to sell, I'm just busy playing foreman at work every day (literally) that I never get around to it. I also have difficulty tracking down boxes, like that's my biggest dilemma finding something Wolf boards and CPS2's to fit in. :p

let me know if you wanna buy one of the UMK3s via PM, and specify which revision you want them to be, cause I can reprogram them to whatever.
