I just got two Ultimate Mortal Kombat 3 boards. I put the first one in a jamma cabinet. The sound was very distorted and making noise during the self test. It showed two Roms failed, so I thougt that was the cause of all of the noise. I then placed the second board in and it was making the same noise. All roms passed. The sounds were extremely distorted during game play. Then the board died.

Question: Is this a jamma board? Did I burn it up?

was it an obnoxious static/distortion sound? it's very likely that your power supply doesn't supply -5V if that's the case. all the Mortal Kombat games require -5V in addition to +12V to provide sound. otherwise it makes that fucking frightening ground hum sound in the background like that.

I think that particular board will black out or reset if it doesn't get the proper juice over a certain period of time. you may not have fried #2.

my suggestion is to check your power supply first. if it's a switcher with screw-on terminals make sure the -5V wire off your JAMMA harness is connected accordingly to the -5V on the switcher.

if it's not a screw-on then disregard those instructions. if that's the case then I suggest you try a different power supply, preferably a screw-on type like I mentioned, so you don't have to start cutting connectors off and splicing wires like one of those big AT box kinds.

I tried it in a Neo Geo MVS 1 slot cabinet. The cabinet is jamma. I will check the power supply this morning. I do have a switcher in there. I'll check to see that the -5V is connected. Yes it was the screeching distorted sound.

You guys nailed it!!! The -5V wire had been cut and disconnected. Then when I connected it, the -5V on the PS was only -1V with load. I changed out the PS and Both boards came up and ran. Still have three bad roms on one them (two are actually missing), but that's an easy fix.

Thanks again,

Jeff
