Hi guys, i have an UMK3 board that checks out perfect in the boot check, but when it goes to revision screen it says CMOS U49 chip bad??? I replaced the battery, reseated all the chips, pressed down the cpu's and i have had no luck, anyone know what is going on? Oh the U49 is a mounted chip, not one i can just replace.

try pressing down on it while booting up and see if the issue goes away. otherwise your going to either have to replace the chip yourself or find someone who can do some surface mount soldering.

okay, i did what brood said and it did boot up fine, i turned it off and it came up fine again. the 3rd time i booted it had the error again, wash rinse repeat with the same results. So i now assume i have a loose connection between the chip and board correct??? If so, do i try and heat up the legs on the component side of the board around the chip to reflow the solder?? It is very small so i don't want to mess it up. Thanks for the help Brood.

anybody around these parts do this kind of repair?? i am kind of leary doing it myself..

I have a post in the General section... I'm taking a couple of months off from board repairs.

As for this one, clean the contacts on the battery holder and replace the battery. The only power to that IC is from the battery... really stupid design.
