I got confused as usual and ended up buying the wrong monitor for my Cruis'n World, got a U5000- thought it was going to be a good replacement, but I realize now that it's a standard res only version and doesn't have the setup to switch between standard and medium like I assumed when I picked it up, it has no headers at the 25khz spot and a sticker on the frame reads 15khz operation only, just noticed these things. But I bought it packaged with a Golden Tee Classic, which I really thought was a medium resolution game at the time when I looked into it and bought it for this monitor, but now that I'm looking again I see GT classic actually plays in standard res, so I've really screwed this up. What can I do to convert this to accept a medium resolution, or is it plug and play to just get a compatible U5000 medium res ready chassis and just drop that in instead? would it need a yoke swap or what? I thought all of these things were dual res, someone help me out I'm lost as usual.

U5000 is plug selectable from 15khz to 25khz. Are you sure you have a U5000?

What is the P# silk screened to the chassis?

P738 = U5000 - dual res.
P717 = U2000 - std res. only
P763 = K7400 - std. res. only

Post a picture. Someone may have just removed the headers and hard wired the U5000 to std. res.

P 738-F. That''s why I'm confused, it really threw me off, it should be a u5000 but maybe the F means something more? Got duped on this one, I thought it would automatically be dual res based on the chassis number, has anyone else seen this type? It has a plug on the 15khz header but empty through holes where the 25 should be.

post pictures

they did make U5000s that were standard res only, I would guess that was during the period after the U5000's launch, but before the U2000 came out for games that didn't need medium resolution.

I need pictures because I'm uncertain if they just nerfed the 25K header or if they didn't include all the different poly caps to run it.

Yep it does seem like there used to be a header there, didn't look very closely before. Why'd they do it?

I didn't work in the industry 30 years ago, back then I was just a mere arcade brat. it was probably intended for people to not change the monitor resolution to medium for a standard res game. which doesn't make sense at all, but it looks like the parts are there and you're just missing the header pins. @zenomorp may have seen one of these and knows more.

we had a U5000 tube at work that said it was for 15 KHz only but I didn't notice it on the deflection board itself which means the chassis was probably replaced at some point.

Maybe running in medium res requires a different yoke, and the medium res header is absent to prevent the operator/tech from frying stuff?

Just spitballin' here... maybe somebody else knows for sure if the yokes are different.

That looks to be one for std res only to me. Looks like the medium res plug was never populated from the factory, there is no vertical sweep mod whatsoever, plus well it says 15k only lol.

the u5000s yoke is different but you can run most std res chassis on it just fine. You just cant run u5000 on medium resolution for instance on a k7000, u2000, 7400 yoke to my knowledge it has to be a u5000 yoke meant for std and medium. But @zenomorp will know for sure and wether its possible to turn one into medium res, however if they manufactured the u5000 std res only monitors with say u2000 yokes then i think you are screwed lol.

That's a very early U5000 before they came out with the dual-res version. No vertical sweep needed. It can run on any standard res yoke.

Look I just want to play cruis'n world or I'm going to snap, I really don't ask for much.

Well then what should I consider doing with my standard only "dual res" monitor? What game would you build with it? It's good for Simpsons or TMNT right? I haven't played a good round of Simpsons since the 90's somehow.

I have several dual-res U5000s. Can hook you up with one. That decal that says "operates at 15khz only" is just a placard to let people know that it doesn't support medium res.

But do you think it would also take a yoke swap to get the proper dual board running?? That's the main concern I have moving forward, I'd be happy to just get a working board dropped in but not yet sure what to expect on yoke compatibility.

No. You can use the yoke you currently have if it's an original U5000 yoke.
So to be clear Mike if its a u5000 from the factory regardless if it came from the factory with a u5000 std chassis only that yoke can still run a dual res u5000 chassis?

Thanks for the info Mike, I'm willing to seek out a working dual board to drop in and try out. I'll message you about your boards whenever I manage to get the extra cash up, if I don't end up getting some cheap basket case board on eBay first. Never bought a working board before, that sure would be nice.
